Sauerkraut at the New Year!
Some cultures eat sauerkraut on New Year's Eve, some on New Year's Day, but what the cultures share is the belief that eating sauerkraut at the start of a new year brings good luck!
The tradition stems primarily from German culture, where fermented cabbage was one of the few vegetables that could be had during the winter months, and they came to believe that the amount of wealth to be gained in the coming year was proportionate to the number of fermented cabbage shreds one consumed. In addition, it was thought that sauerkraut promised happiness and a long life.
