JUNE 2019
FDST Department Head, Dr. Curt Weller and FPC Executive Director Terry Howell Jr. were in Tokyo during the last week of May, visiting the Kewpie Corporation HQ and then toured Kewpie’s manufacturing plant in Kobe. They were part of a larger group from IANR that traveled to Japan to visit a variety of academic and industrial locations such as Kobe University,University of Hyogo, and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co.
Dr. Steven Taylor has announced his retirement effective June 30th. Dr. Taylor has worked in the department since 1987 serving several roles, including department head and as founder and co-director of the Food Allergy Research and Resource Program. Dr. Taylor will remain as a Professor Emeritus and Director Emeritus of FARRP. He will continue to use his office at FIC 281 and will be active in FARRP outreach efforts.
Dr. Hyun-Seob Song will be joining the University with a joint appointment in Food Science and Technology and Biological Systems Engineering. Dr. Song earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering at Korea University. Dr. Song will arrive in early Fall of 2019.

Lab Housekeeping 

Enivronmental Health and Safety has recently released new guidelines that outline good housekeeping practices for all research, teaching, diagnostic and clinical laboratories at UNL. Good housekeeping can significantly reduce the risk of accidents, fires and exposure to hazardous materials.

Working with mice in sterile environments; preparing the food, water, and bedding for the mice and maintaining the sterile conditions of the isolators using aseptic techniques. Assistant Director

Pennsylvania Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services 

The position oversees development of legislation, regulations, and policies based upon the research and recommendations of subordinates and other food safety professionals, in order to strengthen and enhance food safety regulation in the Commonwealth. The position serves as staff coordinator in drafting revisions and amendments to existing laws, regulations, and policies governing the regulation of food processing and handling. The position is point of contact for PA Food Safety regarding new component development. The Assistant Director will also serve as project lead with the Local/315 Health Departments and the Food Sanitarian Program Specialist assigned to the DHD/Local Health Departments project and serves as liaison with federal, state, and local officials in the development and administration of cooperative agreements to ensure effective regulation of food safety in the Commonwealth.

Pennsylvania Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services 

The Director oversees development of legislation, regulations, and policies based upon the research and recommendations of subordinates and other food safety professionals, in order to strengthen and enhance milk and food safety regulation in the Commonwealth. The position serves as staff coordinator on special projects/contemporary issues such as raw milk regulation, milk labeling, and food safety/security; coordinates Bureau food safety emergency and outbreak responses with other state and federal agencies; develops Pennsylvania-specific policies related to the FDA Food Registry and new federal food safety law and regulations; coordinates grants and contracts with FDA and USDA; and coordinates the Bureau's emergency management/homeland security responsibly and represents the Bureau on the Department's Emergency Committee.

Incumbent performs a variety of duties requiring the design, development, research, and adaptation of shell egg and egg product physical and functional quality and other scientific methods and techniques to analyze problems aimed at improving product quality, processing efficiency, and plant sanitation as impacted by laying hen housing systems. The position is assigned to the Egg Safety and Quality Research Unit, Southeast Area, Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture located at the US National Poultry Research Center, Athens, GA.
