The Department is getting ready for the 2018-2019 school year. We are joined by several new faculty members, totaling at 40 full-time faculty for the department. The first  cohort from the UNL-NWAFU 3+1 Program will attending classes at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln which adds over 50 students to our undergraduate numbers. We will also have 20 Masters and 44 Ph. D. students this year. It's going to be an exciting and busy school year!
Dr. Ozan Ciftci  gave an invited talk titled “Nanoporous starch bioaerogels and their novel use to enhance the bioavailability of water-insoluble bioactives” at the Institute of Food technologists (IFT) meeting that was held on July 15-18, 2018 in Chicago. Dr. Ciftci also participated in the Emerging Leaders Network Program.

The Department would like to welcome Dr. Jennifer Auchtung to the faculty. Dr. Auchtung joins as an Assistant Professor. Her research focuses on food microbiology and the effects of the pathogen, Clostridium difficile, on the gastrointestinal microbiome. Dr. Auchtung can be contacted at
Graduate student, Rodrigo Mendonza was featured in the student spotlight of the July 2018 Post-Harvest Loss Innovation Lab (PHLIL) newsletter. The spotlight discussed Rodrigo's research on the safety of maize and limiting post-harvest loss to insects, molds, and mycotoxins . You can learn more about the PHLIL at
Dr. Terry A. Howell Jr. joins the Food Processing Center as Executive Director. Terry was formerly the Senior Manager of Product Development at McKee Food Corporation and has a Ph.D. in Food Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Assistant Professor of Food Processing and Extension Specialist

The successful applicant will develop a nationally recognized Extension program and provide leadership in food processing Extension and outreach education that meets the needs of clientele regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, religion or veteran status. The individual will provide technical and regulatory compliance expertise in food processing (e.g., food safety audits, process approvals for producing safe and high quality products, assistance with product development, process equipment and plant layout/design) in Tennessee to entrepreneurs starting new food businesses, existing food processors, and farmers interested in starting on-farm food processing operations.

Assistant Professor in Sustainable Food Systems Engineering

University of Florida

This is a 9-month tenure-accruing position that will be 40% research and 60% teaching in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department (ABE), Institute of Food and Sciences (IFAS). This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. The faculty member in this position will be responsible for building a research and teaching program that addresses engineering issues at the forefront of food systems. Food security and sovereignty are dynamic pillars of food systems, and this position will train future professionals and develop state of the art engineering solutions on complex problems at the food/energy/water/climate nexus.
