November/December 2022
On Nov. 14th, the Food Science & Technology Department provided two separate activities during the FEWS2 Immersion Days. FEWS2 ( Food, Energy, Water, and Societal Systems) is an Early College and Career STEM program developed for Lincoln Northeast High School in partnership with CASNR. About 80 students from Lincoln Northeast High School came out to NIC for four sessions of activities. Drs. Andreia Bianchini and Jayne Stratton discussed how food preservation reduces food waste, and then they had students make canned salsa. Dr. Villa Rojas shared about the benefits and challenges of making biodegradable utensils. Students observed three versions of homemade utensils including their own pizza crust version.
On Nov. 12, students from across the state attended the Pathways to Careers Conference in Kearney. This event is hosted by the Nebraska FFA and is open to middle and high school students. Sara Roberts and Alisa Holst provided two sessions on sensory science and food science careers. About 75 students attended the sessions.
