Monthly Newsletter No.3. 18th February 2015 - Ashley Carruthers

Newsletter No.3.

www.ashleycarruthers.com

Hello everyone! Thanks for being a part of my monthly newsletters! The newsletter is a little bit later in the month this time because I've been on so many ships lately that it's hard to get decent internet to put one together. Today I'm in beautiful Napier, New Zealand. The town is famous for it's art deco architecture and it's one of my favourite ports for a wander and a coffee. Since the January newsletter a lot has happened! I've boarded three new ships for me, the Radiance and Voyager of the Seas and also the Regent Seven Seas Mariner. All amazing ships and I'm looking forward to going back. Samantha and I have moved into our new apartment in Newcastle, but I'm yet to have more than a night or two there! I've got a bit more time at home in March and April and over the winter season in Australia as some cruise ships head to the northern hemisphere and warmer weather.

On the left is a photo of the view from our apartment in Newcastle! If anyone is ever in town let me know! I love cruising and seeing new places but it's always nice to have somewhere to look forward to coming home to. The last few cruises for me have been mainly around Australia, The South Pacific and New Zealand which is quite a change from the asian cruises of December and January. Below photo taken whilst flying into Hobart.

I recently cruised on three new ships for me. The first new ship I boarded was The Voyager Of The Seas (Royal Caribbean) the biggest ship that comes to Australia with an amazing 1,300 seat theatre. It was a great theatre to play and the band were great fun to work with. The next new ship was the Regent Seven Seas Mariner, an amazing ship. The Mariner is a much smaller ship and has 700 guests. Lastly was the Radiance of the Seas (Royal Caribbean), where I am penning this newsletter. I boarded the Radiance in Auckland and are headed towards Wellington.

The above photo is my view from the stage of the Voyager Of The Seas theatre prior to showtime and the view from the deck as the sun set on show day.

I've been onboard the Radiance Of The Seas now since February 16th and my show night is tomorrow night February 19th. Tonight I'll have a school night and get to bed early. Tomorrow I'll have about a 30-45 minute rehearsal with the band at 4:15pm and then come back to the cabin to shower and get ready for showtime at 7:15pm and 9:15pm. It's always fun working with a new band and establishing how they and I like to work, getting to know each other and taking the musicians through the show etc. The band received my music today and will have it a ready to go tomorrow night for showtime. The bands on the ships vary in size depending on the cruise line. They all have Drums, Bass and Piano. Most also have a guitarist and a number of horns be it one trumpet or up to six horns. The more the better for me!

I can't wait to get home in a couple of weeks and finish my album! All of the instruments have been recorded and it's just time to finish off the vocal recording and then mixing and mastering.

In other news I've booked my first club gig in Australia. I'll be playing St George Leagues Club, Sydney, November 24 at 12:30pm. Planning forward into 2015 I'm going to try to do more and more land work to blend with cruises and be able to spend some more time in Newcastle and Australia, watch this space!
