Civil War 150 Legacy Project visits Petersburg

The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission and the Library of Virginia have partnered to create a state-wide online collection of original Civil War manuscripts that still remain in private hands. The Civil War 150 Legacy Project: Document Digitization and Access focuses on manuscript materials created during the period 1859-1867 that reflect social, political, military, business and religious life in Virginia during the period of the Civil War and the early period of Reconstruction. Citizens are encouraged to bring original family materials to be scanned and included in the Project. Scanned materials will be made available on the web via the Library of Virginia web site and the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission web site.
CW 150 Legacy Project staff will be visiting Petersburg on November 15, 2014. The event will take place from 9:30 am to 5 pm at the Petersburg Public Library, second floor in Group Study Room 1. Appointments are encouraged and a limited number of walk-ins will be accommodated, as scheduling allows. Please contact Renee Savits to schedule appointments at (804) 692-3629 or

Parks and Leisure Services and the Buffalo Soldiers
The Buffalo Soldiers spent quality time with our PPLS After School students.
The Buffalo Soldiers of Virginia Inc., Mother Chapter shared the history of the organization and provided an old fashion "Show and Tell" of stunning motorcycles that aligned the parking lot of First Baptist Church.

Trunk or Treat
Rather than going "door to door" through the neighborhood, children in their costumes go from "trunk to trunk" collecting goodies from volunteers who have decorated the trunks of their cars.

There will be various KIDDIE activities on site; Best Costume Contest, Face Painting, Decorate a Pumpkin, Outdoor Movie (40 Foot Screen) featuring "Hotel Transylvania", free popcorn, apple on a string eating contest, carrot eating contest and much more.
