What would I tell my nine-year-old self or my twelve-year-old self or any of my past-year-old selves to help her stay strong, dig deep and be brave?
I'd tell her:
"You are ok."
"What you are feeling, what you are looking for – you’ll find when your heart & mind grow more."
"Be patient, you’ll make mistakes, you’ll fail, you will betray yourself but you can learn in those moments & be ready the next time."
"You will be ok. It hurts, and you will be ok"
This December marks our tenth birthday, and I get asked one question A LOT. Why Mini Mermaids and Young Tritons? Why is that your career choice? The answer (no matter how many times I get asked) pretty much floats around the same pool of reasons. Because we ALL need to know (and the sooner the better) that while life can be hard, challenging, dark, confusing, overwhelming and lonely sometimes....we are ok. Who we are from the inside out is what matters most. When we face all the kind of stressful/scary/exciting/unsure moments in life, we can go back to the center..the core of who we are and remember that we are ENOUGH. That we are OK. That we can do HARD THINGS. That we are BRAVE even when we are shaky and a little or a lot scared.
Our kids are under crazy amounts of stress, and while every generation has had different types of stress....our kids are scared to be in their classrooms, they are afraid to leave their homes. They are feeling isolated and doing harmful things to themselves because of the damage done by others through online and in-person bullying. They are feeling pressure to perform and achieve and it's keeping them from living fully. We can give them tools to stand strong when life is stressful, we can teach them to use their voice to stand up for themselves and others, we can show them how to take failures and mistakes and turn them into resilience and self-compassion.
Our kids need us to take the time to show them how. That's why I keep pushing forward with Mini Mermaids and Young Tritons, our work is far from done. We are really just scratching the surface and we have you to thank for where we've been and where we are going. Thousands of kids have heard this message of HOPE and COURAGE and CONNECTION and with you alongside thousands more will. On behalf of Mini Mermaids & Young Tritons around the world - thank you.

Keep reading, stay connected and let us know what you would say to your nine-year-old self. We are in the midst of writing our first edition of Teen Mermaids and we want to know what to teach to these Mermaids so they can live their lives fully....ready to chase their dreams and goals in life.
Email me at heidi@minimermaidrunningclub with what you would tell yourself in those early years to encourage and remind your younger version, I really want to know.
Did you know that 44% of kids 8 -12 years old report being stressed out in the US. FORTY-FOUR PERCENT.
How can we help them? We can give them tools as we do in Mini Mermaids and Young Tritons (it's not just a running club..it's life coaching for kids). AND check out this quick read on different kinds of stress our kid's face and tips on how to work through those stressful moments. We are all in this together - YOU are not alone if you're worried about your kiddo feeling the stress of all that's happening in our world and in their personal life. Email us if you have some other ideas on how to help kiddos with stress and we will post your ideas on our Insta-story for others to see!

Christine Bieniek found Mini Mermaids a few years ago and was excited to reach her own girls and those in the community with the messages within the curriculum and give girls the change to fall in love with movement. Well, those girls are growing up and so Mini Mermaids is too. Christine helped us push ourselves a little bit....uncover what we could do differently for teens and this fall, we will pilot our Teen Mermaids with her and her team. I asked Christine to tell me a little bit about why she chooses to give up her time and energy coaching Mini Mermaids, why it matters to her and where she has seen growth in her Mermaids. Read on for some good inspiration! Thanks, Christine for being one of our volunteer Coach heroes!
"Being a part of the Mini Mermaid Running Club "Squad" has forever changed my world! It has wrecked me but in the most wonderful of ways!! Not only have I been blessed to watch the girls grow throughout the program, but it's also helped me as well. I've grown as a mentor, mom, and woman.
Navigating Middle School is a huge challenge and having the opportunity to help these girls learn tips to make better choices at doing life is such a blessing. This last season really opened my eyes to what the girls need. They trusted me and opened up to what they're going through and what they want to hear about, real-world topics, hard topics. Seeing them come out of their shells to share and to help each other showed me that they are getting everything the Mermaids are about. It was so beautiful to watch friendships be made and walls come down. They cheered each other on, they empowered each other, when someone was having a rough day - they used the power of their words to lift each other up. No one was left behind!
Having the opportunity to watch the camaraderie build in the group was amazing! I love being a part of such an awe-inspiring group that lifts girls up and encourages them that they are perfect the way they are! Being able to pour into these girls and teach them about leading a healthy lifestyle, and tips to help them navigate the challenges that are real-life for them is so important! The girls walk away with such value and you can see it in the way they carry themselves and how they interact with each other. When the shy, quiet, wall-flower lights up and tells you 'thank you' for what you're doing because 'she thinks she's special' it grabs your heart and you know the program is making a difference! I'm so grateful for what the Mini Mermaids Running Club has done in the lives of my middle school group!!" - Christine B
