Members' corner - What's new and happening


>> 2021 General Assembly meeting (26-27 Jan. 2020, Online)
Due to the Covid-19 sanitary crisis and given that restrictions might bear on international travel at the beginning of 2021, the 2021 General Assembly meeting of EuroMarine will be held online. The details of the session programmes are being finalised by the Steering Committee and will include a formal business and decision-making session and a science & scientific strategy session. Please book the dates. Information on the programme and registration will be posted on the webpage as it becomes available.

>> 2020 EuroMarine Call for FWS & WG
The applicants to the 2020 EuroMarine call for FWS and WG have been notified of the outcome. Once all the recipients have confirmed their acceptance of the funds the full list of the funded activities will be announced on the website and through a special newsletter issue.

>> Call for Volunteer EuroMarine Mentors
EuroMarine's early career researchers group OYSTER is still seeking further EuroMarine members to volunteer as mentors for the new OYSTER Mentorship Programme, which is to launch in January 2021. Further details on the programme are available here.

Jellyfish in the Next Ocean working group (JELLY-NEXT), 1 January 2021 - 31 December 2022, Online


The new EuroMarine-funded Working Group JELLY-NEXT have announced they will be holding their first meeting remotely towards the end of January/early February. The WG is being managed by the National Institute of Biology along with co-organisers Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn and the Technical University of Denmark. The WG aims to stimulate networking with suitable research infrastructures and explore how jellyfish researchers can benefit from their services as well as shape strategies to accelerate progress in the field of jellyfish research and public awareness. The meeting date will be set soon and a separate announcement for registrations will be sent at that time.

Survey on the use of IPBES assessments in policymaking at national and subnational levels


IPBES is launching a survey to collect information on the use of completed IPBES assessments in policymaking at the national and subnational levels. This information will allow IPBES to understand if and how its assessments have been used by policymakers and what tools, methodologies and types of activities could further support the use of IPBES assessments and thereby contribute to the advancement of the IPBES policy support function.

IPBES call for nomination of experts in scoping of a methodological assessment of business and biodiversity


The Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has announced a call for experts to participate in Platform workshop for 26-30 April 2021 that will be focussed on a methodological assessment of the impact and dependence of business on biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people.

Advanced training course on blue biotechnologies,15-19 March 2021, Messina (Italy)


A new training course on Blue Biotechnologies, jointly organised by BlueMed CSA and the BlueBio ERANET COFUND, is now open for applications. The advanced training course aims at contributing to the creation of ‘blue skills’, filling knowledge gaps while matching market opportunities via a joint effort among the scientific community, research infrastructures and business operators.

EASTBIO BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership (UK) are offering an interdisciplinary 4 year-long PhD project on the role of sponge competition in cold-water coral reefs. This project will involve ROV video analyses and secondary metabolite profiling in search of compounds of medical and ecological relevance.

Research from EuroMarine Foresight Workshop published in Nature Climate Change


Results from a foresight workshop funded by EuroMarine in 2018 have been published as a paper in the Nature Climate Change publication, one of the leading climate change publications worldwide. "The future of Arctic sea-ice biogeochemistry and ice-associated ecosystems" paper resulted from the foresight workshop of 40 attendees from 14 different countries.
