>> OYSTER Mentorship Programme
Don't forget that EuroMarine's early career researchers group OYSTER have launched their new Mentorship Programme! General Assembly members are still welcome to volunteer and OYSTER asks that all recipients of the newsletter advise interested mentees they can learn more about the programme and mentors here. Applicants or interested mentors/mentees should e-mail mentorship@euromarinenetwork.eu.


>> Updates to Funded Activities 
Due to the impacts of the ongoing pandemic on research, travel and events many of the EuroMarine-funded activities which were due to take place over the last year and a half have been postponed and/or adapted into remote events. Activity leaders are reminded to contact the Communications Office as soon as new dates are established. In the meantime, please visit the website to remain updated on internally-funded activities.

>> EuroMarine 2021 call for Foresight Workshops
In 2021 EuroMarine will be funding Foresight Workshops ('horizon scanning', FWS), with each funded FWS receiving up to a maximum of €7,500. FSW proposals should have a clear foresight dimension and target a scientific publication. While the call is open to any topic, the Steering Committee would welcome proposals addressing EuroMarine priorities, as defined in EuroMarine's 2018 publication Ocean Frontiers for Sustainable Development Manifesto. Additionally, support to initiatives within the All Atlantic strategy and pledge are welcome. More information can be found via the link below.

Co-designing solution-oriented research for sustainable development - developing guidance for research partnerships/projects, 8 July 2021, online


The MeerWissen Initiative of GIZ together with ZMT, Future Earth Coasts and Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) will hold virtual event in the framework of the UN Ocean Decade Laboratories "An Inspiring and Engaging Ocean" with the title: "Co-designing solution-oriented research for sustainable development - developing guidance for research partnerships/projects".

GlobalHAB Webinar Series: Modelling and Prediction of Harmful Algal Blooms, various dates, online


GlobalHAB have announced an online series of open seminars and discussions starting in June 2021 to address the grand challenge of predicting harmful algal blooms. The next webinar, "Using Machine Learning algorithms for HAB prediction", will be held 15 July.

7th Ramon Margalef Summer School, 5-8 October 2021, online


The 7th edition of the Ramon Margalef Colloquia: "A cross-system view of the biological carbon cycle in the anthropocene", will be held online. The 2021 Colloquia aims at promoting creative thinking by bringing together ecological knowledge from experts on terrestrial, limnetic and marine systems.

SOLAS Summer School 2022, Summer 2022, online


Due to worldwide travel restrictions, the in-person SOLAS Summer School on Cape Verde has been postponed to summer 2023. Applications for this School will be reopened in summer/fall 2022.A virtual version of the School will take place in summer 2022.

EuroMarine 2021 Call for Foresight Workshops

Call for contributions to online satellite activities of the Ocean Decade Laboratory


As part of the UN Ocean Decade, seven laboratories will be held which each cover one of the Ocean Decade Outcomes. The laboratories will take place from July 2021 – May 2022. The next laboratory accepting proposals is "A Clean Ocean"

Call for participation in survey on marine monitoring efforts during Covid-19


CNR (Italy) are compiling an inventory of all the dedicated and routine monitoring efforts that were put in place during the COVID-19 lockdown. The activities in questions are those which have the specific aim to assess how the marine environment was (de)impacted by the absence/reduction of anthropogenic disturbances.

Training Workshop - A new era for biodiversity: from taxonomy to AI, 19-23 Sep 2021, Brest (France) and online


The BLUE REVOLUTION projec has launched ts first Training Workshop. Students will be introduced to infaunal benthic communities and the latest methods for studying them using a combination of imaging and computational methods of AI and Deep Learning.
