Where would God take us? Where would God take us? This is the question I ask myself as I pray for you individually, and think about Jesus’ advice to build our lives on his words. Where would he take us if we took up his challenge?
It was the mid 1800’s, the morning after a church meeting, and a young American found himself in a conversation with a senior British pastor, who looked at him at one point and said the following words…
The world has yet to see what God will do with a man fully consecrated to him.
That young American’s name was Dwight L. Moody, and years later, as he remembered his voyage home, he said, “Those were the words sent to my soul from the living God. As I crossed the wide Atlantic, the boards of the deck of the vessel were engraved with them, and when I reached Chicago, the very paving stones seemed marked with, ‘Moody, the world has yet to see what God will do with a man fully consecrated to him.’
“By God’s help,” he resolved, “I aim to be that man.”
Moody, would then go on to become one of the most pivotal Christians of his entire generation. Just one man. Fully devoted, as a disciple of Jesus.
Think of your school; think of your workplace; think of your friends and your loved ones. How might God use you once devoted to him? Where might he take you? What might he make of you? And for that matter, what might he make of us, all of us, together?
To help you begin living the answers to those questions, here’s our homework from last Sunday…
- Take a moment to look at yourself from an outside perspective. Pretend you’re a person perusing a building, and that building is your life. Look at the way that you’re living, your habits and routines, those little behaviours, those ingrained attitudes that up the substance of your life, and ask, “What is being built here?” If someone were to enter the building of my life, would they learn something about Jesus?
- Read Matthew 5:1-16, our passage for this week.
Whatever the answers to the above questions are, they belong in the same category envisioned by that senior British pastor: something that the world around each of us has yet to see. So join us in these 12 weeks of building, and build your life on Jesus words! I guarantee you, it is the only way you will ever discover what he’s hidden inside of them, for you, today!
