WSIA-L&I Self-Insurance Colloquium takes place today in Seattle
(L-R) Alaska Airlines' Donna Egeland, REI's Misty Hardie, L&I's Ryan Guppy and Vickie Kennedy discuss early return to work issues at today's Self-Insurance Colloquium
Approximately 85 workers' comp professionals are gathering today at Swedish Medical Center for "Preventing Development of Chronic Pain and Disability with a Focus on Low Back Pain," the latest in the series of self-insurance colloquia brought to the self-insured community jointly by WSIA and the Department of Labor & Industries. Today's program features an update on treatment and payment guidelines for chronic back pain arising from the work of the Bree Collaborative; risk factors and interventions for preventing chronic low back pain; approaches to treating lower back pain; utilization review for MRIs; early interventions to encourage fast return to work; and the latest news on opioid prescribing. For those unable to make today's colloquium, a copy of the materials submitted to L&I can be downloaded by clicking here.
Audit reform webinar materials available
L&I Self-Insurance staff joined Lisa Vivian of Eberle Vivian yesterday to broadcast a complimentary, community-wide webinar providing an overview of the audit reform pilot program Labor & Industries will launch January 1, and field questions from participants. For those who missed the webinar, L&I's presentation can be downloaded by clicking here, and a link to the full archive of the webinar can be obtained by contacting Kari Heinold. The volume of Q&A seemed to overwhelm our webinar server toward the end yesterday, so we're looking at options for providing more information about the pilot to members and perhaps a second run of the webinar early next year. Stay tuned.
IIU Certification Review graduates all pass December exam!
We were delighted to learn this week that all participants in our Industrial Insurance University's Certification Review passed their exam and will be certified by the Department. WSIA offers the Certification Review course quarterly in the days before the L&I exam, taught by expert instructors in in both claims handling and Washington's unique workers' compensation system. This quarter's course was taught by Erinn Hyre and Trevin Steepy of Sedgwick and Kevin Kincade of Eberle Vivian. It's indispensable prep for anyone sitting for L&I's exam, and a good overview/refresher on Washington's system for other professionals. The next round of prep and examination takes place in March, 2015.
