Recap: JET Pre-Departure Orientation

The newest group of JET participants set off for Japan on Saturday, July 27th. Here in Denver, we sent off 60 excited ALTs/CIRs with a farewell reception and orientation hosted by the Denver Consulate. Participants learned about visa regulations, Japanese etiquette, and even a few new games they can use in their classrooms! We had a great time chatting with them during the Q&A and reception, and look forward to learning all about their adventures over the next few years.
Good luck, JETs!

Alumni Spotlight: Jessica Moy

Hi Jessica! Thanks for joining me today. I wanted to start off by saying congratulations on being a 40 under 40 honoree! Do you mind telling us a little bit more about what you are being recognized for?

Hi! Thank you. When I came back from the JET Program in 2006 I worked for CU Boulder for the Program for Teaching East Asia where I did some event planning. I also volunteered with JETAARM as the event coordinator and treasurer for several years. I eventually found the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers when they were looking to hire a national conference coordinator, which was my true initiation into event conference planning, and it’s my work with SASE that Connect Association has recognized.

What interested you about working with this group in particular?

Being on JET and living in Japan was a big influence - I wanted to be involved  with the Asian-American community. I heard about the organization through my husband who is a Chinese-American engineer!

I know you were a CIR when you were on the JET program - where were you placed and what was your favorite part of your position?

I lived in Yamagata City. My favorite part of working as a CIR was the feeling of being recognized as a member of our office - I even got to go to Korea and Shanghai with my coworkers.

You’ve obviously had a lot of success in the years since, but what was your transition like first coming back from Japan?

It took a while - probably just as long to re-integrate as it did to get settled in Japan. When I came back I went straight into graduate school, which made the transition a little bit easier than having to search for a job right away.

How do you feel that your time on JET helped you in your career?

In my position as CIR I did event planning, although on a smaller scale than I do now. I really learned more about myself, though - my work ethic, my interests, etc. I do my best to keep up with friends from JET/Japan and stay involved with the JETAA community, and am currently hosting an exchange chaperone!

What is your favorite JETAARM event?

Karaoke Shinnenkai when we did those! I love hearing the Japanese classics (editor: we might have to bring them back!)

Anything else you want to tell our alumni community?

Japan will always be a part of your experience so make sure to remember it and share it! Continue to live with public diplomacy - the only way we are going to have peaceful global relations is through grassroots personal relationships - keep giving back!

Do you know a standout alumni in our community who deserves recognition? Let us know! We would like to celebrate the successes of our community with a shout out every month! Send nominations to: editor@jetaarockymountain.org
