Upcoming Continuing Education Events

Emotional CPR:  Connecting, Empowering, and Revitalizing 
Veterinary Social Work will be hosting a 2-day Emotional CPR training, February 16-17, in Knoxville, TN. The goals of this ECPR training are to provide training for veterinarians to help others through emotional crises with increased efficacy and without self-harm and to develop a group of DVM’s who, having been trained in ECPR, are willing and prepared to reduce stigma about mental illness in the profession by telling “their own stories” of adversity and healing. This training is approved for 12 CEU's for veterinary professionals.
 

A public health approach.
Help people through emotional crises.
Veterinary specific although all are welcome.


This training is a function of the Dr. N. Paul Nolan Memorial Suicide Awareness in Veterinary Education (SAVE) Program. Such awareness and education efforts were an expressed wish from Paul and his family.

Course Objectives:

  1. To be proficient in program design, implementation, and evaluation
  2. To be proficient in using tools to creatively develop potential growth of their professional career
  3. To understands ethical considerations for animals and clients, and knowledge to respond appropriately
  4. To be competent in facing challenges of developing AAI programs and working directly with clients
  5. To be competent in engaging with clients and documenting the progress of animals and clients orientation

Program Description:

This program is designed to integrate knowledge obtained in three online modules in the veterinary social work training program: 1) Animal Related Bereavement: Implications for Social Work Practice, 2) Compassion Fatigue Management, and 3) The Link: Violence Towards Humans and Animals. Through the techniques of observing, reflecting, and experiencing, the intensive will guide the participant through the process of “putting it all together” and practicing the skills required for veterinary social work.

Veterinary Social Work Spotlight

2018 Lifetime Achievement Award: Sandra Brackenridge, LCSW, BCD
Sandra Brackenridge, LCSW, BCD, is the 2018 recipient of the NASW/Texas Social Worker Lifetime Achievement Award. Sandra is private practice clinical social worker, who provides clinical supervision to approximately 25‐30 Master Level Social Workers working towards LCSW. She is also a Veterinary Social Worker and a field instructor at the Center for Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care, a self‐employed Veterinary Social Work Program Consultant, and an affiliate faculty at University of Tennessee Veterinary Social Work Certificate Program. This year, Sandra retired as a Tenured Associate Professor of Social Work at Texas Woman’s University.

Sandra has been a tireless pioneer for the field of Veterinary Social Work. As the previous Coordinator of Counseling Services at the School of Veterinary Medicine at Louisiana State University to a Veterinary Social Work Program Consultant, she continues to leave an impactful legacy in this specialty of the social work field.

The above services shall be provided under supervision of the appropriate clinical discipline. This position represents the Animal-Assisted Therapy Program through a variety of mechanisms including presentations, meetings with referral sources and interviews. Primary function is to oversee and manage all aspects of Lollypop Farm’s End of Life Services Program. Some tasks include:
 

** Monitor and maintain the End of Life Services phone line and email address, returning calls and emails within 24 hours.
**Counsel owners who are considering euthanasia and/or other end of life services, such as cremation, for their pets via telephone, email and in person.

**Provide high quality customer service and exercise patience and empathy when working with difficult, emotional or angry customers.
