Welcome to issue 14 of the Research Support Newsletter


 
Dear colleagues,
Welcome to our first newsletter for 2016.  I would like to highlight some activities that will take place during this year:
  • We will continue to roll out the Research Integrity Training program. This year’s program has been jointly developed with the Graduate Studies office and will focus on post-graduate students using a blended learning approach. The Research Integrity training online course is also open to all staff and is accessible via LOOP (RIO_2016).
  • The upgrade of the research information systems is well on its way. The old RSS system will be replaced with our new “DCU Research Engine” which has a user friendly interface and further publishing capability to the web. In addition, academic profiles will be linked to a search engine that will be accessible via a new DCU research portal to enable  external stakeholders to find specific expertise in DCU.  
  • Great progress has also been made in gathering information about the  research infrastructure in DCU.  Although still work in progress,  a good array of DCU equipment and facilities and how to access them can be accessed already via the research infrastructure page.     
  • The President's Research Awards will take place on Wednesday 24th of February.  All the DCU research centers have been invited to present a poster about their activities and I would like to invite everyone to attend and discover what’s going on. 
  • The Schools' Research and Innovation webpages have been updated and next we’ll turn our focus to the DCU research centres' websites and will support them in the process.     
And last but not least, two new research support officers, with specific expertise in Education and Humanities and Social Sciences have been recruited to support our colleagues in the Incorporation colleges and they will start very soon.

January Updates 

DCU Academics secure funding for innovative €5.1 million health project: DCU Business School academics, Prof Regina Connolly and Dr Paul Davis, have been successful in attracting large EU funding in relation to the MAGIC Post-Stroke Project. The project aims to enable significant change in the delivery of health and social care services for patients post stroke.

DCU success at the SFI Infrastructure award: Congratulations to  Dr Kieran Moran from Insight and Health and Human Performance for his success at the SFI Infrastructure award. For more information about his project see our website here

The European Commission presents its evaluation of the 7th Framework Programme for Research: For more information visit the European Commission website here

€50 million expansion of ADAPT research centre for Digital Content Technology: €24 million provided from SFI and $26 million from industry to support ADAPT's expansion. 

DCU success in SFI Discover funding awards: DCU had three successes in the latest SFI Discover funding awards. Congratulations to Suzanne Little from Insight who has received funding for the Girls Hack Ireland, Eilish McLoughlin who was successful with her Physics Busking programme and Cara Green who was successful on behalf of Adapt's Problem-Solving Initiative (PSI). DCU announces flagship Lego Education Centre: The creation of the flagship Lego® Education Innovation Studio (LEIS), will see the new Institute of Education (IoE) at DCU’s St Patrick’s Campus, Drumcondra become the first centre of teacher education in Ireland to mainstream these innovative approaches across all its programmes. DCU success in IRC New Horizons: Congratulations to Paola Rivetti ,School of Law and Government, who won an Irish Research Council New Horizons Research Project Starter Grant of € 94,740, To find out more about her project visit the research support website here.

Survey on Research Data Management at DCU: Research data management is a key element of good research practice. In order to learn what your current needs are in this regard, we would like to invite you to complete our survey. Your feedback will be used to inform and develop supports for research data management at DCU, and your engagement is much appreciated. Please find the survey here

HRB Research Strategy for 2016-2020: HRB launched their new research strategy via a webinar on the 19th January 2016. The webinar (including indicative calls for 2016) is available on their website here.

Photonic Generation of Millimetre Waves for Radio over Fibre Communication Systems: Eamonn Martin’s project on Photonic Generation of Millimetre Waves for Radio over Fibre Communication Systems was supported by the Irish Research Council through the International Centre for Graduate Education in Micro and Nano Engineering (ICGEE). Call for Expressions of Interest to attend ERC grant writing workshop
Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Research Council are planning a hands-on European Research Council proposal preparation workshop for Irish applicants to the ERC & want to gauge the level of interest from applicants across the universities (date and location tbc). If you are considering applying to the ERC and attending such a workshop please register your interest by emailing annelouise.holloway@dcu.ie by Friday 5 February 2016

Research Day - 24th February: The DCU President will present three "President's Research Awards" to academic and research staff across DCU and the linked colleges.The successful candidates will be awarded their prizes for their outstanding research achievements as academic or research staff. Research day will commence at 12 noon on the 24th February and will include presentations by the award winners. Lunch will be provided in conjunction with a showcasing of  DCU research centres.

Science Education for Responsible Citizenship Seminar 26 February: The Centre for the Advancement of STEM Teaching and Learning (CASTeL) are delighted to host a seminar by Professor Ellen Hazelkorn on the topic of Science Education for Responsible Citizenship. You can find out more here.

DCU Business Matchmaker, 17 February 2016, The Helix: It is nearly two weeks to the Business Matchmaker. Companies are currently setting up meetings with researchers to discuss opportunities for collaboration. If you want to showcase your research to industry register now. The event will also include presentations from companies on how they have previously successfully collaborated with DCU. You can register here

Research Integrity Training Programme - Session 2; Ethics considerations and the DCU ethical review process: This second session in the programme will take place on the 3rd February 2016 (3p.m., HG10 Nursing Building). Graduate students and their supervisors are encouraged to attend. For further information, please see the DCU website here.

Photonics PPP Annual Meeting, Tuesday, March 1, 2016 (All day) to Wednesday, March 2, 2016 (All day): The Photonics Public Private Partnership Annual Meeting will be held 1-2 March 2016 in Brussels. The launch of the photonics research and innovation priorities process for Horizon 2020 work programme 2018 - 2020 will be the focus of the event. The event  provides the opportunity to discuss and network with experts of the European photonics community from industry and research.  For more information click here

Impact and Research Metrics in the Arts & Humanities: 1 February, 2016- Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute. This is the first workshop as part of a series developed by the Irish Humanities Alliance as a collaboration between it and Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, Maynooth University and University College Cork. This workshop is part of a series of lunchtime workshops focusing on the issue of Impact in the Humanities subject areas. The workshops will cover topics including: quantifying impact, academic publishing, European funding and how to engage with stakeholders.For more information click here

Funding Opportunities 

Marine Biotechnology ERA-NET-The 2nd call of the ERA-MBT is now open: The Marine Biotechnology ERA-NET (ERA-MBT) is a consortium of national funding agencies seeking complementarities between national activities by pooling resources to undertake joint funding of transnational projects in the area of Marine Biotechnology. The activities will support the development of the European bioeconomy. See the EU Marine Biotech page for full details of the application process. The deadline is 16 March 2016, please contact your research officer if you are interested in applying. 

Agro-tourism training activity sponsored by the ERASMUS+ programme: There are 2 fully-funded 10 day training courses on agro-tourism and teaching Spanish available in Spain from Permacultura Cantabria (NGO located in the north coast of Spain) and supported by Erasmus+. Pre-announcement for ERA4CS Joint Call: Pre-announcement for ERA4CS Joint Call Pre-announcement for a large Joint Transnational Call on Researching and Advancing Climate Services Development by Innovative co-development with users. This topic seeks to advance understanding in the following domains: Research in support of the development and deployment of Climate Services, Research to integrate Climate Science to application cases and decicision making, Research for co-development of innovative Climate services. Call opening: Early March 2016. Wellcome Trust - Seed Awards in Science: These awards enable researchers to develop a novel idea to a position where it may compete for a larger award from the trust or another source. Funding supports pilot studies, scoping studies, preliminary data gathering, proof-of-principle studies, planning sessions and meetings of collaborative networks. Awards are worth up to £100,000 each over a maximum period of two years. Funding covers direct costs of research, including materials and consumables, equipment, animals, research assistance, fieldwork and data collection, and travel. Call deadline: 8th February 2016

Wellcome Trust - Investigator Awards: The Wellcome Trust invites applications for its investigator awards in biomedical science. These enable researchers at any career level to address important research questions relevant to human and animal health and disease. Applicants must have an established academic post at an eligible higher education or research institution. Awards are worth a maximum of £3 million for up to seven years. They may cover research expenses, including research assistance, animals, equipment, fieldwork costs and funding for collaborative activities, travel and subsistence, and overseas allowances.
