Dear <<First Name>>,

Let me begin by expressing our deep appreciation to so many of you for your wonderful response to our year-end appeal.  Together, we have already raised nearly 47% of our $50,000 goal.  THANK YOU!

Reflections from the Field, Guatemala
"The gangs are certainly aware of our presence.  But they haven't targeted us as they normally do small groups in the community... we aren't 'flashy'; we don't make promises we cannot keep - we simply provide safe opportunities for young people to thrive.

I believe that the gangs recognize we are helping their loved ones - sisters, brothers, cousins, nieces, nephews. Many gang members had no options, no opportunity for an education, a safe place to play and socialize. But when they see the people they love given an opportunity for a chance at a better life, maybe, just maybe they want that for themselves, and that is why they let us work in their communities."  CLICK HERE to read Program Director Hector's full letter.

Children First Home Visits, Haiti
Throughout November and December, even in the face of violent unrest, our team is meeting families in their homes.  Our job is to understand their needs and to appropriately and professionally address those needs - physical and/or emotional.  Our social worker Franklin assists with psycho-social support while our nurse Cesar provides life-saving medical care.  RN Cesar treated more than 80 children and 40 adults in November alone, all who would have otherwise been left to suffer.  As a result of our home visits, we delivered food kits to 48 families.  Additionally, it was determined unsafe housing conditions for 10 families must be addressed immediately to prevent further illness and danger. Roseline's was one of those families. Three families had to be moved immediately!  These families - all participants in our Children First program - live in very precarious conditions due to severe poverty.

Savings & Credit Group, Haiti
Incredibly, our team initiated a new round of parent trainings with extremely poor families enrolled in Children First!  Last month, almost 50 parents participated, eager to learn new skills that will save their family during these trying times and into the future.  Initial classes focused on parental responsibility during crisis situations and working together to produce income.  As a result of the trainings, 6 groups of parents have launched new small profit-making activities.  They are so grateful for the support and the opportunity to better themselves so they can provide for their struggling families.

Christmas Celebrations
This month, in addition to our ongoing work in all of our new and continuing programs, HRI is also hosting 17 Christmas Celebrations in Guatemalan villages and Haitian orphanages, thanks to our generous church partners who sponsored them.  Children are receiving presents, sweets, decorations, a holiday meal, and more - in addition to the monthly supports of nutritious food, clean water, medical care, proper sanitation, psycho-social support, trainings, etc. which we provide.

Year-End Appeal Update
In order to continue all of our core programs and the newer crisis response programs highlighted above, we need to raise $50,000 by the end of this month. We've already received $23,300. With your help, we can raise the additional $26,700.  Every single gift works together to create change in the life of a family, a teen or a child in crisis. Thank you in advance for giving an extra generous gift this month.
Thank you,

Rachel Zelon
HRI President & CEO
