Spotlight: Reaching High-Risk Children
As our work and relationships with communities and orphanages has grown, we have become aware of severe cases of life-threatening hardship and illness.
We consider all of the children targeted in our programs to be “vulnerable”, defined by their lack of access to basic services such as clean water, decent sanitation, nutritious food, and healthy living environments. However, within this group there are some children that face additional challenges and extreme difficulties that threaten their mere survival. These children are categorized as “extremely vulnerable” or “high-risk”. They may face similar living conditions as others, but their situation is compounded by a variety of factors that make it impossible for them to fight disease. Exposure to parasites, contaminated water, human or animal waste, mosquito-borne diseases, etc. can quickly destabilize their already fragile health and threaten their lives.
These complex cases require great sensitivity and compassion. HRI is delivering personalized, immediate and lifesaving interventions through a “menu of direct services” to these children and their families. Basic items that we take for granted in our lives, can save the life of a high-risk child in Haiti or Guatemala - access to clean water, latrines, shoes, nutritious food, and clean cookstoves, to name a few.
We urge you to continue to support our work to reach children facing life challenges each and every day. Please consider a gift to HRI and our lifesaving efforts.
