MEDIA RELEASE                             Surfers Point, Margaret River, 8-19 April 2016

One month to go
In just under one month, from April 8 to 19, the 31st edition of the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro will get under way at Surfers Point.

The world’s best surfers including Kelly Slater, Gabriel Medina, Joel Parkinson, Stephanie Gilmore and local surfing hero Taj Burrow will compete for World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) points over 12 days.

The WSL CT brings the top 34 ranked male (plus two wild card entries) and top 17 ranked female (plus one wild card entry) surfers to the extraordinary waves in the South West of Western Australia.

Surfing WA CEO and Event Director Mark Lane says that the WA Trials that prelude the Pro on April 7 provide an unparalleled opportunity for local surfers.

“As part of our contract with WSL, we created an opportunity for two WA surfers to compete in the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro as wildcard entrants,” Mr Lane says.

“Last year, after Jay Davies won the Trials, he went on to beat Mick Fanning who was world number one at that time and the reigning world champion Gabriel Medina in the heats, going all the way to quarter finals.

“Jay demonstrated exactly why we created the WA Trials – giving WA surfers a chance to compete on the world surfing stage.”

Mr Lane congratulated female WA Trials surfer Bronte Macaulay who has been called up to compete in the opening WSL CT event, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast that starts today, replacing injured Lakey Peterson.

“We’re stoked for Bronte - it’s a fantastic opportunity for her surfing career to compete at the top level. We wish her all the very best at Snapper Rocks and beyond – I reckon the whole of WA will be watching the live webcast and cheering for her!”

“Surfing was one of the first international sports to adopt new technologies as their main platform for distributing content - now digital attracts the majority of viewers watching WSL events via the live streaming.

“It’s fair to say that surfing is leading the way to deliver and distribute content across linear, digital and social media channels, through a number of mediums and across a number of devices.

“The reach of the Pro is enormous – last year millions and millions from around the globe watched the live webcast and the television broadcast – it really does put Western Australia, and particularly Margaret River, on the world surfing map," Mr Lane said.

Margaret River is the only wine region in the world that also has world-class surf breaks worthy of a WSL Championship Tour event.

“The Drug Aware Margaret River Pro is one of the best surfing events in the world and it’s no secret that the surfers love coming to Margies for the surf, but also for the beautiful natural surrounds and the excellent food and wine,"

Mr Lane acknowledged the important role of sponsors, particularly the Western Australian State Government, which has been a sponsor of the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro for over 25 years.

Over 12 days, surfers will compete on the days producing the best conditions.
