Newsletter - February 2015

This is the twelth of a regular ‘monthly’ newsletter published to club members providing summary key updates.  For further information go to the club website.

December Member of the Month Michael Head

If anyone wants to see the benefits of joining a running club, then they just need to look at the improvements in performance that Mike has made over the year. One of only a handful of members to complete all the Pentathlon distances, he has got faster and longer and turned in some great results in the latter part of 2014.

A superb run in the Gosport Half Marathon, followed on from the Great South Run and the Bournemouth Marathon. Parkrun times have tumbled and we're looking forward to Mike's enthusiasm for running continuing into 2015.

January Member of the Month Roberta Buhagiar

Although she wasn't able to get much running in throughout 2014, Roberta has worked hard and has had a great start to 2015. She competed for the club in the December Cross Country races, and also ran the Stubbington 10K and the Romsey 5 Mile races. She was also one of the crazy Hedgie ladies that so brilliantly supported each other to complete the Brutal 10K at the end of month.

Not only did she complete four parkruns in January, she managed to get a PB in the New Year's Day run. In addition, she won the first HERC handicap race by a considerable margin.  Roberta has also been a great charity fundraiser, raising a significant amount for the Rainbow Centre by running the cake stall at the Wyvern 10K last year.  Well done Roberta, we all hope you can build on this positive start to the year.

We are moving..........

Since the club was formed just over two years ago, our home has been Wildern School. We've now grown to over 250 members, which is putting pressure on the car parking and other facilities at the school. In order to support these numbers and allow us to continue to grow, we've been searching for somewhere else in the area to base ourselves.

The Committee is delighted to announce that we are moving to the Ageas Bowl.

We have become affiliated with Hampshire Cricket in the Community, a charity that aims to extend sporting involvement across the county. The Ageas Bowl already hosts Poseidon Boxing Club, and we have the opportunity to become very influential in the charity's charter to promote health and well-being in the local area.

Our home will be the Arthur Holt pavilion - this is the old golf club house, overlooking the nursery ground. The pavilion has just been refurbished and will give us a permanent base for the future. Although we won't have exclusive use of the building, we will be able to put up Hedge End Running Club and Triathlon Club signs and use it as our very own club house on club nights. There are changing rooms and toilets in the pavilion.

Use of these facilities and basing ourselves at such a prestigious location will allow the club to move to another level in our development plan. We expect to be able to offer more "formal" club nights throughout the week, rather than the adhoc sessions that are informally organised at the moment. We're also planning to extend the club to Juniors - initially 15 to 17 years old, and set up other sub-clubs, similar to the Triathlon Club. We will be able to use the club house for activities such as foam-roller sessions, core strength training, yoga for runners, and turbo training. We will be able to use the area around the main stadium for interval training and hopefully measure a track around the nursery ground in the summer. Of course, we will also be able to use the bar in the atrium to socialise after training.

We're very grateful to Wildern School for the help that they've given us to get the club established and the school is very supportive of our move to the Ageas Bowl. We will continue to meet at the school as normal for the next couple of weeks and then start meeting at our new clubhouse from the 2nd of March.

For any further information about the move, please feel free to talk to any Committee member.

The first three HERC Winter handicap races have been a great success.  With more than 60 members taking part so far, a host of great performances and a lot of fun had by all.  The competition is currently being jointly led by Diane Rice-Adams and Mark Staples, but there is plenty of time for this to change!

Full details of the event can be found on the website.

Captains Corner

We had a very strong presence at both the recent HRRL races. 67 Hedgies took part at Stubbington 10k (32 women and 35 men) with many PBs recorded. At Ryde 10 mile, we had 20 runners (10 women and 10 men). Given the hilly terrain and freezing weather conditions, there were not so many PBs at Ryde, but some very good performances on a difficult course.

Overall the ladies were 2nd team at Ryde, with Claire Powell coming 2nd in her age category. The ladies A team continue to have a good lead at the top of division two, with the B team moving from 4th place to 3rd after Ryde.  The

Men's A team are 5th in Men's A div 2 and Men's B team are 9th in Men's B div 1.

We have had equally impressive results off road, with the ladies team being 1st at the cross country at Lord Wandsworth and 6th at the cross country at Manor Farm.

Finally, but certainly not least, the ladies team won the Romsey 5 mile race, great running again.

Our Races

Once again, we are working with Wyvern College to put on the Wyvern 10K. The race will be on Sunday the 12th of July and is now open for entries, race details.

We are also working with Running Mania to organise a new 5 mile race in Hedge End and West End. The race will start and finish at the Ageas Bowl and will be on Sunday the 27th of September. We're hoping that this event will grow to become a significant and popular race in the area. More information will follow over the next few months as the plans firm up.

As well as organising these races, we will be providing marshals for both events. We're hoping that club members (and their family and friends) will offer to run in one of the races and marshal in the other one. We certainly have enough members to achieve this.

Kelly Wickens is coordinating the marshals for both events and will be sending out further information over the next few months to find out your availability and preferences for marshalling or running.

Club AGM

The club AGM will be held on Tuesday the 24th of March from 8.00pm to 9.30pm. The meeting will be held in one of the function rooms at the Ageas Bowl. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Apologies should be sent to Linda... secretary@hedgeendrunningclub.com

This year, all of the Committee officers will be elected. In accordance with the club's constitution, any member wishing to stand for a position must register their intent to stand at least two weeks before the meeting by sending an email to Linda... secretary@hedgeendrunningclub.com.

If more than one member registers for a position, then there will be a ballot at the meeting. In accordance with the constitution, we will produce ballot papers for the vote, therefore it's essential that these are prepared in advance.

IT WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE TO REGISTER INTENT TO STAND FOR A COMMITTEE POSITION AT THE AGM.

We look forward to seeing you at the AGM, it is your club so make sure you have your say.

Races selling out

Some of the more popular races among the club members are coming up in the next few months and are likely to sell out in the next few weeks, so make sure you get your entries in for Salisbury 10 Miles, Eastleigh 10K and Southampton Half marathon as soon as possible.
