Crafting a future


It’s been a topsy-turvy time for Phil Hankin over the past few years but he’s now crafting his own future thanks to the mental and physical tools he receives through the Partners in Recovery (PIR) program. Most days he’s head down at a work bench set up in his kitchen, creating all sorts of leather goods. Smiles have replaced frowns and while Phil’s family has been fractured, it is functioning fairly well once again.

Being Well


Being Well, the Black Dog Institute Blog for Health Professionals, is now freely available to everyone – not just to members of the e-mental health in practice community as was previously the case. The blog focuses on a wide range of issues related to mental health and wellbeing. We have been told that it is both entertaining and educational, and too good to keep to ourselves!

The National LGBTI Health Alliance has been funded by the Department of Health to facilitate a series of online professional development webinars and factsheets which provides a range of expert support and resources for health professionals. These are now available on the PHN section of our website and can be accessed by registering online or by clicking here to view and access the factsheets.

Everybody Needs Good Neighbours


Neighbour Day, on Sunday 26th March, is Australia’s annual celebration of community, encouraging people to connect with those who live in their neighbourhood.

Social connection helps prevent loneliness, isolation and depression, and creates welcoming and supportive communities. The 2017 theme for Neighbour Day is: The Importance of Social Connection for the Elderly.

Free Mental Health Course for Aged Care Workers 


With a desperate need for better mental health awareness and support in our aged-care facilities, beyondblue is offering a free online course to assist aged-care workers in recognising the symptoms of depression and anxiety, and better managing the care of their residents, while also safeguarding their own mental health.

Principle 3 of Recovery Oriented Practice


Principle 3 of Recovery Oriented Practice is Attitude and Rights. This involves: listening to, learning from, and acting upon, communications from the individual and their carers about what is important to the individual; promotes and protects their legal, citizenship and human rights; supports individuals to maintain and develop social, recreational, occupational and vocational activities which are meaningful; and instils hope about their future and ability to live a meaningful life.

SANE Australia’s Facebook page is a fantastic resource available to individuals experiencing mental illness and their carers, to find out more about sane.org and engage with other people interested in mental illness, health and suicide-related issues without stigma, prejudice, or discrimination.

Mental Health Act 2016 has Commenced

Queensland parliament passed the Mental Health Act 2016 on 18 February 2016. The new Act commenced on 5 March 2017 and is similar to the Mental Health Act 2000 but there are several key differences that better align the legislation with good clinical practice. The new Act will represent a major step forward for patient rights and will strengthen the role of family and support persons.
