It's The Holiday Season

As we enter the holiday season, let us reflect on what is good - our boundless zeal for the arts, our appreciation for our patrons, our health and happiness, and our love for our community. For these things we are thankful!

We have two great opportunities for you to hear and support us in December:

From Artistic Director Chad Eby

This time of year, we all think and reflect about the things that matter to us most. For me, that’s family. Family takes on many forms; there’s obviously the one I live with, but there’s also my musical family - the ladies and gentlemen of the PTJO, my colleagues and students at UNCG, and all the others I work with in my freelance work. I am blessed beyond measure in this respect, and I cherish this embarrassment of riches year in and year out. But there’s also the larger family I’ve been adopted into in this great city...

While I was trucking around Greensboro hanging flyers for our upcoming holiday show, I ran into my friend Brian Clarey, editor for Triad City Beat - which incidentally is a great paper that you should be reading weekly to keep up on local issues. We were talking about how much we love getting out into the community (he delivers thousands of copies of TCB to boxes and businesses all over town HIMSELF...dedication) - how it gives a chance to talk to folks, see what’s changed and what’s the same, and get caught up with the many different types of faces and folks with whom we share Greensboro.

One of those folks is Joe Scott, the overlord of Geeksboro Coffee and Beverage Company. You may remember that we played a PTJ8 (octet) show there last fall celebrating the 50th anniversary of Star Trek. Well, as it turns out, Geeksboro is celebrating its own anniversary this fall - 5 years! We are incredibly humbled, perhaps geeked out, to have been invited to help them celebrate. Joe and I have curated a list of musical choices from the various and sundry pop-culture media for which Geeksboro is well-known: TV, movies, comics, video games, etc. Wally and I will be joined by Brandon Lee, Ariel Pocock, Cameron MacManus, Aaron Matson, Steve Haines, and Daniel Faust. Come join us as we celebrate the legacy of a grass-roots, built-from-scratch, one-of-a-kind Greensboro business. Tickets will move fast, and there is limited seating. I’m excited, and you should be, too!

Speaking of anniversaries, our holiday concert is just one shy of Geeksboro...4 years. We’ve got a great show queued up for you, with some of your favorites plus some new surprises. We think it’s the best holiday program in the Triad. I play and attend a lot of Christmas music performances every December, but our show, presented to and for you all, means the most to me! Once again, we’ve got two shows that day, but tickets certainly will sell out, so stop into the box office sooner than later!

And you, as well, are ALL a part of our family. The arts bring out the best in the Greensboro community; there’s nothing better than remembering how blessed we all are in the company of let’s meet up in December. Stop me after the concert so I can wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays...I mean it!

See you soon.

The Piedmont Triad Jazz Orchestra is thrilled to announce a corporate sponsor partnership with Moore Music Company! Together, the PTJO, along with the assistance of Moore Music Company, will continue to provide our community with world-class jazz music programming and music education outreach initiatives.

Moore Music Company is central NC’s largest, and oldest, locally owned music store located in downtown Greensboro.  Founded in 1939, the store today is a full service music store offering band and orchestra instruments for sale, rent to own and lease, accessories, lessons, repairs and print music.  It also sells guitars, ukuleles, pianos and organs.

In late February, 2017, Al and Patti Stephens became the fifth owner in the store’s 78 year history. Residents of the Greensboro area for 37 years, the Stephens have two daughters and two grandchildren. Music runs in the family. Al, an EMF alum (both as a student and employee) has a BFA in Oboe Performance and minored in piano and conducting. Locally he has conducted the Greensboro Philharmonia and numerous musical theater productions including CTG’s Wizard of Oz. Patti studied piano and voice while in college and has sung in several church choirs in the area. Their oldest daughter, Liz, studied music education (sax) at ECU before graduating from UNCG with degrees in History and Psychology. Natalie has an undergraduate degree from Elon in Musical Theater and MM in Voice fron SIU.

Purchasing Moore Music Company gives Al and Patti the opportunity to combine their years of working in B2B sales and retail with their passion for music and music education. Their mission for Moore Music Company is to be the catalyst and advocate for music education and accessibility regardless of one’s age.

Members of the PTJO individually and collectively support Moore Music Company, and we urge you to please do the same. Thank you, Al and Patti, for your generosity, as well as for your trust and confidence in our fine band.
