Ennis Book Club Festival 2019

The annual Ennis Book Club Festival is back from 01-03 March 2019. Just 4 months to go! Time to plan that spring journey to Ennis for our annual feast of reading and friendship at Ireland’s only dedicated Book Club Festival.

We’ve lots of exciting plans in the pipeline, which we’ll unveil over the coming weeks as they are confirmed. To be the first in the know, make sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter and register for our monthly newsletter on: www.ennisbookclubfestival.com.

This month’s issue contains:

2019 Festival Programme author – Thomas Lynch

We are delighted to announce that essayist, poet, and funeral director Thomas Lynch will be joining us in March 2019. He has written four critically acclaimed volumes of poetry, three award-winning volumes of essays, and a book of short fiction. By using his own daily routine as poetic fodder, Lynch has transformed the mundane task of preparing the dead into a life-affirming event. His lyrical, elegiac poems describe the dead citizens of Milford, Michigan, his own family relationships, and scenes and myths from his Irish Catholic upbringing.
Thomas Lynch
Sometimes described as a cross between Garrison Keillor and W.B. Yeats, Lynch’s work dissects the vicissitudes of the human experience with grace and wit.

The Beyond Borders Book Club

The very popular Beyond Borders Book Club is back for 2018 and 2019. It will take place once a month for four months during the winter and will finish with a panel discussion during the weekend of the Ennis Book Club Festival 1st - 3rd March 2019.  Each event will be chaired by Clare based poet and Community worker Sarah Clancy who will interview each participant in front of an audience about the book they have chosen.

Michael Harding at glór in association with Ennis Book Club Festival

We are really looking forward and delighted to be associated with an upcoming event in glór where best-selling writer and raconteur Michael Harding will read from his latest memoir, ruminate on the difference between psychotherapy and religion, and relate the story of his pilgrimage to Skellig Michael, in his ongoing search for meaning.

EBCF Recommends

Matchstick Man by Julia Kelly For November the team in EBCF recommends Matchstick Man by Julia Kelly. Julia Kelly met a charismatic and successful artist, Charlie Whisker, while she was working on her first novel. He was twenty years older than her. Their relationship was passionate and extraordinary; each of them inspired the other. Their friends were writers, artists and rock stars; they lived a glamorous life of exhibitions, parties and concerts. They became parents to a daughter they adored. But Charlie suddenly changed, becoming hopelessly forgetful, angry and confused. Matchstick Man is an unbearably honest, unsentimental and heartbreaking description of a brilliant man's mental disintegration and its effects on his family. Charlie's disturbing behaviour is described in a series of terrible, understated revelations.  An unforgettable telling of a story that will be familiar to many thousands of people in the UK and Ireland.
