Ennis Book Club Festival 2018

We are delighted that we have been able to reschedule some events following the unfortunate cancellation of the EBCF weekend due to snow. We look forward to seeing you at them and encourage you to forward this newsletter to friends who may be interested.

Rescheduled events – Saturday 9th June

The main events that have been rescheduled will take place on Saturday 9th June 2018. Much to our delight, Sebastian Barry is available so the very special tribute to him will go ahead. Many were also looking forward to hearing the inspirational Ruth Fitzmaurice and seeing the documentary about her husband and we are pleased that both of these events will also take place. The schedule for the day is as follows:

2pm: Film Screening of 'It's Not Yet Dark' €5
4pm: Ruth Fitzmaurice in conversation with Mick Heaney €12/€10
8pm Sebastian Barry in a tribute hosted by Seán Rocks & guests €15/€12

It will be a stimulating day with plenty of time for chatting or browsing in between events. If you aren’t local, make a weekend of it and enjoy the beauty of Clare in summertime. Walk in the Burren, look out over the cliffs of Moher, take a dip in sea, or visit Bunratty Castle are just some of the things you can do. Contact us if you would like any advice.

Children and Young Adult’s Program – 18th to 20th April

We also managed to reschedule the Children and Young Adult’s events with Sarah Maria Griffin, Donal Ryan, Caroline Busher and Nessa O'Mahony. These will take place between 18th and 20th April in Shannon and DeValera Libraries and are free. Schools wishing to attend should contact the relevant library. The events and times are given on our website.

Beyond Borders Book Club Panel Discussion – Wednesday 3rd May

The Beyond Borders Panel Discussion event has been rescheduled to take place on Thursday 3rd May at 8 pm in the De Valera Library.
The background on this event that we invited four people who live in Clare but are from other countries to lead this unusual book club. Four enjoyable evenings were held in January and February where readers from Egypt, Poland, Argentina and Nigeria presented their favourite book by a writer from their country – see our website for details.
All four readers will discuss the books in a panel facilitated by Sarah Clancy. Expect a diverse and accessible discussion of literature from all corners of the world. All are welcome. No booking is required and entrance is free.

Listowel Writers Week with Sally Rooney and Mary Morrissy

In a gesture of generosity and cooperation, Listowel Writers’ Week kindly invited EBCF to host an event in Listowel. Sally Rooney and Mary Morrissy, originally scheduled for 2nd March, represent to us the best in Irish writing. It is with great pleasure that the Ennis Book Club Festival appears at Writers’ Week on Thursday 31st May to present a reading by them together with a Q&A chaired by Niall MacMonagle. So those of us who were really looking forward to this event now have another opportunity. A heart-felt thank you from Ennis to Listowel!

Finally, our thanks…

All of us involved in organising the EBCF were very disappointed to have to cancel the weekend due to the snow and from all the lovely comments we received, it’s clear that many of you shared our disappointment. We’d like to thank glór for their great cooperation; our contributors and colleagues who had put so much preparation into it; our sponsors whose generosity we have appreciated more than ever; and most of all to our loyal audience.  Thank you all for your understanding and support. Hopefully you will be able to attend the rescheduled events and to encourage friends to join you. We are already full of ideas to make the 2019 Festival a very special one.
