A quick reminder about an upcoming workshop:

Digital Unlocked is on Thursday and Friday this week - 1/2 October. It’s a two day digital boot camp run by Kingston Chamber of Commerce. It will help you learn or refresh a whole range of digital skills to help improve your online business presence. 

I’ll be delivering the session on email marketing (and see below for why I think it’s an important topic!)

Who’s the Ying to your Yang?

I’ve recently worked with a few people who have been struggling with some aspect of their business.

Often it’s marketing in general, and social media in particular.

Sometimes it’s finance in general, and doing the accounts in particular.

Or admin in general, and diary management in particular.

Whatever the struggle, a common theme often emerges.

My client feels guilty.

They say something like:

I know I SHOULD do this - but I hate it.

Occasionally there’s an underlying issue we need to get to grips with.

More often than not, it’s simply that the topic is not a skill, a strength or an interest for them.

In which case my suggestion is always the same.

Who else could help you with this?

Who is the person who LOVES doing this kind of thing.

Find them, and find a way to work with them.

Use their skill, strength and interest to help you grow your business.

It will nearly always be money well spent.

It’s all about the nuts and bolts!

Last week I was talking to a new client.

His business had taken off so fast during lockdown that he had been super busy servicing his customers.

There had been no time to focus on anything else.

I was relieved to hear that he and his partner had at least set the business up as a limited company,

And they had done their VAT registration.

But pretty much everything else was still being done ‘on the hoof'.

Product development, quotes for work, billing?

They were making it up as they went along!

Luckily, they knew this wasn't a good idea.

Which is where I came in.

Together, we’re going to take a step back, look at the infrastructure of their business, and get it into shape.

We’ll start with their vision for the business, and then develop their strategy.

Legal, finance, compliance, sales, marketing and customer service....

...we’ll make sure that all those nuts and bolts fit together to form a secure base for the business’s future.

And I hope that from time to time you pick up a tip, an idea or a reminder that helps you with your business.

Of course, I also take the opportunity to tell you about upcoming events.

And in sharing stories about some of my clients, I give you a gentle reminder that I’m first and foremost a business coach.

To put it bluntly, this newsletter is one of my marketing channels, alongside social media, networking, and the occasional ad.

Do YOU have a mailing list?

I highly recommend it!

You don’t have to commit to a weekly mailshot like mine.

You could simply use it to send occasional updates - perhaps about a new offering or special offer. 

Once you have a mailing list, you need people to join it!

You can do this by asking individuals, promoting it on your social media, mentioning it whenever you network, including a sign up box on your website, and so on.

It’s good to offer an incentive, something to persuade your ideal client to sign up.

This is called, in the jargon, a ‘lead magnet’.

It should magnetically attract them to your mailing list!

From a quick look at other businesses I spotted special offers, advance sale info, factsheets, quizzes, free podcasts, and much more.

The key is to pick something that sits comfortably with your business style and how you want to come across.

Right now, my own lead magnet is an ebook (you may remember getting it when you signed up).

But like everything else, you need to keep reviewing and upgrading.

Very soon, I'll be launching a fun new lead magnet, just in time for the launch of my new business book!

A quick social media challenge

If you spend any time on social media I’m sure you’ll know one thing.

The more likes and comments a post gets, the more it is shown to others.

That’s how posts go viral. 

As a small business you want others to like and comment on your posts.

And it’s good to support other small businesses by liking and commenting on their posts too. 

Supporting each other is a great way for small businesses to build their audience.

This week I’ve set myself the challenge of liking, commenting on or sharing at least 5 social media posts every day.

That’s 25 businesses I’ll have supported by the end of Friday.

Will you join me in this challenge?

If 5 is too many, you could do 3 per day, or even 1.

Maybe buddy up with a fellow business owner or two, and commit to respond to each other’s posts.
