CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
INTERNATIONAL MUSIC THEATRE COMPETITION DARMSTADT
In cooperation with the International Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD)
The Staatstheater Darmstadt is looking for composers who are explicitly interested in music theatre.
The competition is comprised of two parts:
In the FIRST PART, a maximum of five short pieces will be developed and presented in a staged performance based on a joint theme.
In accordance with the jury’s decision, the Staatstheater Darmstadt will commission four to five composers to produce a dramatic scene (max. 20 minutes in length) for singers, chamber orchestra and electronics (if applicable). The Staatstheater Darmstadt will allow the composers to use the main stage of the theatre for several weeks to rehearse the pieces. Individual scenes can be staged in various locations, e.g. on or behind the stage. Audience members may be moved as needed and could be seated, for example, directly on stage or elsewhere.
The commissioned works will premiere during the 48th International Summer Courses for New Music Darmstadt in July 2016.
Each composer will receive compensation totalling 5,000 euros for their work.
In the SECOND PART of the competition, one composer from the first part will be commissioned to produce a full-length music theatre piece. It is planned to premiere this piece in July 2018 at the 49th International Summer Courses at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. This commissioned work can, but doesn’t have to, be based on the previous composition performed in the first part of the competition.
Submission deadline: 20. August 2015
