Editorial

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

summer is loosening it's grip on Europe and we are coming back to the office. While it is still some time until the MTN 2018 edition, we are not completely done with the winners from 2015 – and you can be part of it:
With Prof. Roesner from LMU University in Munich we are planing an edited volume on contemporary developments in the music theatre world with a focus on MTN 2015. If you are interested in contributing an article, read the call for proposals below.
At the same time some winning productions are still touring the world of course.

And if you need a good excuse to visit Rotterdam next year as well: beside the annual Operadagen Rotterdam in May 2017 the music industry meeting Classical:NEXT is looking for showcases and pitches in their call.

We hope you are having a great time and keep our fingers crossed for your current projects.

All the best,

Christian Grammel
(for the team of Music Theatre NOW)

Edited Volume: Music Theatre Now – Contemporary Developments in Original Performances [working title]

Call for Proposals

Edited by David Roesner (LMU Munich)

Contemporary Music Theatre, particularly when investigated from a global perspective is developing rapidly and has become a driving force in interrogating and innovating the relationships between text, music and stage, narrative and form, performance and technology, productions and audiences.

Taking the tri-annual competition and festival „Music Theatre NOW“, which is one of the International Theatre Institute’s (ITI) initiatives, as a starting point, we are proposing this edited volume as an important contribution of trying to map and analyze the current aesthetic, dramaturgical, musical, technological and organizational characteristics of new work, particularly in often small scale and independent formats.

The focus of this volume is on new original music theatre works in performance, distinguishing it on the one hand from scholarship on “Regietheater” (new directorial approaches to the operatic canon), but also reflecting the fact, that in many cases the distinctions of libretto, score, performance (as individual objects of study) is no longer sustainable.
This volume will concentrate as its object of study the 14 winners and 4 special mentions of the Music Theatre NOW competition of 2015, many of which are still touring and all of which are audiovisually documented and available on request.
The aim of the book would be put academic analyses (from a wide range of methodological perspectives) into dialogue with reflective writings by or interviews with the artists themselves (composers, directors, performers, designers, producers, dramaturgs etc.).

Contributions should be 5000-8000 words and would be due in Spring 2017. All publications are subject to a peer review process.

Proposals of 300-500 words should be submitted to d.roesner@lrz.uni-muenchen.de by 30 September 2016. Please include your name and academic and/or artistic affiliation(s).

In all, he had edited and published over 1000 songs. He was thus honored as "The King of Folk Singer in Western Regions".
