Will you help us raise funds this Christmas?

This Christmas we would like to ask you to help us raise funds to continue meeting the needs of local young people. Our Out of Home Care program grew by 167% last financial year. With growth comes more responsibility, more staff and increased need for resources. To service the growth of this program and others, our team has grown from 14 to 41 bringing with it diversity in many ways including the way each person engages within our service and with young people.

Are you in the fortunate position to help us? You can make an individual or a business donation or get a group of work colleagues together and see what you can come up with - $5 each in a hat? A charitable donation box at your Christmas party? Whatever you can provide we will love you for it!!!

Please donate now!

What is Out of Home Care? OoHC is provided to young people who cannot live with their parents for one reason or another. At Burdekin we provide the following types of OoHC:

  1. Supported Family Group Home Placements;
  2. Emergency Placements (staffed home model within the community);
  3. Supported Independent Living (caretaker model, lead tenant model, caretaker granny flat model and Independent model);
  4. Placement Option for OOHC Young people who are pregnant and/or have children.
Our Supported Family Group Home is a bespoke model for Children and young people who are cared for by a permanent, authorised live-in carer who provides care in a home provided and maintained by us.

Upon young people exiting our Out of Home Care program 95% are engaged in education. A significant achievement we are very proud of!

McDowell conducted research in 2008, 2009, 2013 and found that there was a significant lack of support in the transition phase when young people leave care. For example, of the 50% of young people interviewed that were leaving care at age 18, 40% did not know where they were going to live.

Our results average statistics with all our clients knowing where they are going to live when leaving care.

Our holistic and preemptive approach to youth homelessness goes well beyond providing safe accommodation and is effective but resource intensive. Just like in a family, we go the extra mile for each one of the kids in our care.

With additional donations through fundraising initiatives we can continue to offer the highest quality integrated support. We can engage and build relationships with parents and young people in their environment, hopefully averting a family crises. In short, you enable us to go the extra mile!
