Your August updates from MSB Solicitors

Good afternoon and welcome to your latest updates from MSB.

As we all gear up for the long weekend, let us bring you some of our great news stories from the past month, beginning with the fantastic announcement that our family team have been appointed to the International Child Abduction Contact Panel UK. A fantastic feat for the team and due reward following years of hard work and dedication. Read more about this in our top story.

In other news, we have smashed our charity target for the year, raising more than £6.5K for our nominated charity Claire House. Paul Bibby impressed delegates with a talk at Liverpool Loves Business earlier this month, and last week the MSB team, including all staff from our three offices, celebrated summer in style at Blackburne House .

All in all, August has marked another fantastic month for us here at MSB. May we wish you a sunny and restful summer bank holiday and we look forward to bringing you more news as the Autumn draws in next month.

MSB appointed to national panel for child abduction

We are delighted this month to bring you news that MSB have been appointed to the International Child Abduction and Contact Panel by the Official Solicitors Office.

News comes following an intensive application process evidencing considerable experience and expertise in this area. MSB now join around just 40 other firms in the UK - predominantly London-based - and are the only firm in the North West including Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, North Wales and Cheshire.

MSB have grown their expertise in the field of international child abduction significantly in recent years. Family partner Emma Carey and solicitor Emma Palmer are both Resolution-accredited specialists in this area, solicitor Eve McGowan is on the Law Society’s advanced specialist panel for child abduction, solicitor Kirsty Leather has completed a masters of law in International Law and solicitor Wendy Eves has developed an excellent reputation as a specialist, cross-border mediator.

Emma Carey and our family team have spent a number of years taking steps to develop not only their experience, but their resources too - developing networks in London and across the country in order to carry out international child abduction work effectively.

MSB will be amongst just over 40 firms nationally who will work directly with the International Child Abduction Unit in the UK. Cases are allocated on a rota basis and are only in the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

The Legal Aid Agency in the UK will also be informed of MSBs appointment to the panel, which provides a green light in terms of MSB obtaining legal aid for international child abduction clients.

Emma Carey says: “It really is a very difficult process to even be considered for appointment to the International Child Abduction and Contact Panel and I couldn’t be more proud of the efforts of the team at MSB.

““I am lucky to be supported by a fantastic team who share my passion and their combined experience and commitment has been pivotal to us securing a place on the panel.”

We've smashed our charity target for the year!

We are incredibly proud to have smashed our target for our nominated charity Claire House, raising £6,868.24 for the year.

We had committed last August to raising £6,500.00, which would pay for one full day of care at the Claire House hospice over on the Wirral. We’re delighted to have been able to reach this target and raise a little extra too.

Fundraising activities have included teams from MSB taking part in the Splash Dash in Liverpool’s Sefton Park last Autumn; and more recently, some of our team were involved in Snowdon at Night – a nine mile round hike by moonlight to one of Britain’s highest summits.

John McCreanney from our commercial team also took part in a comedy night organised by the charity. John undertook a programme of training before bravely taking to the stage in a bid to raise some laughs, raising more than £600 for the charity along the way too!

Those efforts have been supported by a number of smaller, more regular fundraisers including a pyjama party at our city centre office, sponsored runs, sponsored silences, events and dress down Friday’s.

Claire House are an incredibly deserving charity, providing care and support to families whose children won’t live to be adults.

Managing partner Paul Bibby says: “Claire House really are a very deserving charity and we have enjoyed working with Beth and the team – so much so that we have decided to extend our support and work with Claire House again for the year ahead.

“I am very proud of the efforts of the entire team at MSB in helping us to reach our fundraising target, and would particularly like to thank Danielle Blaylock and John McCreanney who have worked hard to develop a sustained calendar of events and raise enthusiasm for others getting involved.”

Paul Bibby impresses at Liverpool Loves

You may remember we brought you news last month that MSB were to sponsor the second Liverpool Loves festival, which kicked off with Liverpool Loves Business on Thursday 4th August.

As part of an impressive programme headlined by Google and including roster of talks from prominent local business owners, MSBs managing partner Paul Bibby delivered a session on ‘How to Build a Service-led Business’, winning praise from a number of the delegates in attendance.

Paul gave a witty and candid account of his own journey in business, recalling the successes and the pitfalls that have helped to shape MSB. He drew on personal objectives to develop a firm with an ethos centred not only on excellent client-care, but also on excellent care for staff and employees, saying ‘at MSB, we invest in our people’.

When asked what made MSB different from other law firms, Paul said: “Our commitment to our people has helped us retain a continuity with our clients. Clients rarely want to hear about accolades, awards, accreditations… more often than not, when dealing with lengthy and in many cases emotional legal procedures, clients just want to be assured that the person they have consulted and in whom they have invested their trust, will be the very person who helps and supports them all the way through the process. That makes a real difference.”

Delegates took to Twitter following the session, thanking Paul for a ‘fantastic’, ‘engaging’ and ‘charismatic’ session and congratulated his no-nonsense approach and unique vision.

A fun time for all at our summer soiree

We’d like to extend huge thanks to the team at Blackburne House for hosting us in fantastic style earlier this month for our annual summer party.

Claire, Brenda, Lesley and the whole team at the Blackburne House really pulled out the stops to make it a memorable evening for all. The evening began with a welcome drink – a very pretty and very drinkable gin and champagne cocktail. Soon food was served and it truly was an amazing spread – juicy burgers, tasty sausages, flavoursome chicken and the most incredibly tender steak accompanied by chips, dips and an array of delicious salads, we were very impressed indeed.

Brenda worked with us all the way through to ensure the evening was seamless, even despite a last minute turn in the weather!

The evening entailed a talk from some of our partner organisations, including Dave Woods, chairman at MSB Woolton; Beth Pochin from Claire House; and Ben Osu, organiser of The Unsung, which MSB have committed to support next year.

There was a light hearted awards ceremony marking the achievements of individuals within the team before a DJ took us into the evening and even had some of us dancing on tables - a great time was had by all!
