Free Online Poetry Workshop for Youth
engaging, creative, language arts curriculum
for 1st-12th grade - no prep required!
March 27th, 2020

Dear Friends,

As California and the nation continue to shelter-in-place, helping and hoping to "flatten the curve" of COVID-19, parents, students, classroom teachers and teaching artists are responding to a new reality.  Over the past couple of weeks, California Poets in the Schools has been working hard to assemble a free, online poetry workshop for youth in 1st-12th grade. These lessons are created by professional poets throughout California.  It is an offering to families and educators across the nation in these unprecedented times.

Many of us at CalPoets have already begun to incorporate these online lessons into our homeschool endeavors.  We have been meeting groups of poetry students on Zoom and other video conference platforms for poetry workshops, and we have engaged our own kids with these lessons as we do language arts in the living room.

Please share this resource widely with parents and teachers in your circles. Everyone is scrambling for good curriculum that isn't hard to implement.  This is that!  Lesson plans are labeled by grade level.  There will be something for everyone from 1st-12th grade and we will continue to add lessons to the workshop over time.  Young people will likely be able to navigate the website themselves.  However, it also works for parents to take the lead.  No prep is required for any lesson. Adults can play too, of course, if you can find a minute.

Stay safe.  Stay home.  Stay connected.

Warmly,

Meg Hamill
Executive Director
