a life of action...

When Fia saw the story I did for today, she laughed & said, Is there something I need to know?

After being thrown under the bus for my woeful ignorance of Downton Abbey yesterday, I could see where she might be concerned. But it just me wandering through the house, wondering when I'd be able to settle in to a good John Wicke or Steven Segal movie.

Because, the truth is, ever since I read an essay by Roland Barthes on professional wrestling as spectacle (Here's a link to it, if you'd like to read it yourself.), I've never looked at those action movies the same since. For me, they're all about how good people struggle to hold on to their principles in the face of a world that is constantly asking them to throw those principles aside. It's the struggle of integrity we all face to some degree or another nowadays, as we can all see so clearly playing out on our own national stage...

As I've gone on, I think I've distilled it for myself more into this: how do you live a life that feels true all the way to the center of your bones?

Some days I'm better at it than others. On the days I'm aligned from top to bottom, it's a bit like flying. I move gracefully through the world, experiencing moments that ring like a Tibetan bowl. Other days, well...other days. The thing I've found most often from those days has been quite unexpected. I'm out of alignment because I'm being the idea of alignment, the idea of how someone who's aligned would look & act. It turns out that when I'm doing that, I'm not really paying attention to the actual world around me. Which is when I bump into things that say quite curtly, Hey, I bet that's going to leave a mark...

Those are the days I need a little bit extra reminding. Which brings me full circle back to John Wicke & Steven Segal. Oh yes, I feel a good movie coming on. I'm going to leave Downton Abbey for another day...

with love, b

P.S. This was something I did just for today. But at Flying Edna, we've got a bunch of new cards Fia did (click here for that) & we've got a book & calendar pack you might be interested in (click here for that). Check them out when you get a chance...

thoughts for the week...

There is so much going on in the world lately & it bounces seemingly with no rhyme or reason from the utmost care & humility to the most senseless violence & every  place in between. See Fia's take on how to hold that in her essay this week: room for it all...
