busy work...

The other day I was sitting in the sun with my notebooks spread around me, writing & drawing. Fia walked in & said What are your plans for the day? I said first I was going to draw & then I'm going to go from there. She stood there, not saying a word...

Turns out my plans needed to include doing a couple of storyblocks & a set of secrets & getting an email sent. Among other things.

It reminded me of a conversation we had when she & I went to our dinner a few weeks ago. Halfway through the night, we talked with the man who chose all the wines. He told us about his honeymoon to Italy, a place he goes regularly for business. He scheduled out the entire three weeks so they wouldn't miss a thing. Two days into it, he looked at her one morning & noticed she wasn't all that happy with his plans. This isn't working, is it? he said. She shook her head. What would you like to do? he said. She told him her top three things. That's all I really want to do, she said. We can make up the rest as we go along...

He said it was like a light came down from the heavens. She just wanted to see it WITH me, he said. Not racing around doing things just because they were on my list. So, off they went & did those three things. He laughed when he told us. The funny thing is we did almost everything on my list, he said. But we did it together...

So what if I had a different list once Fia added in her requests? What I regularly notice is how little any list matters when I do what comes next with my whole heart. Especially when I have a chance to do it with someone I love best of all...

with love, b

thoughts for the week...

It's already October, and now until the end of year, it seems that time will move twice as fast. Here is Fia's take on how to find a bit of grace around this in her essay this week: a different way of self care...
