book lovers unite...

There is nothing quite like a really good bookstore.

I’m talking about those small, local stores where you go in and walk out hours later, filled with a list of new titles and authors you previously never heard of… or a handful of books you never thought you’d find… The people who work there love reading and, without looking it up on a computer, can answer any question you have. Without hesitation, they will show you exactly where the book you’re looking for rests on the shelves…

It’s a sort of ancient magic, but these rare places do still exist. And if you live in a town with one of these bookstores, treasure it and support them! (I’d be remiss if I didn’t add that libraries can possess a similar magic… accessible to all, equally in need of support.)

On a recent email exchange with a friend, we swapped titles. A favorite way to share what’s going on in our lives, is to let the other know about any current book adventures. She suggested Richard Power's The Overstory. And I suggested Nnedi Okorafor’s Akata Witch and Akata Warrior

Curious to see what I might find, I snuck in an impromptu visit to the book store... I was immediately ushered to the book I was looking for, along with a suggestion of 4 others. I just smiled at the friendly conversation aimed less at selling me something and more at sharing the joy over this particular topic of trees and nature writing.

Maybe it’s the longer nights or the darker days, but now feels like the perfect time to curl into a good book…

thoughts for the week...

It's already October, and now until the end of year, it seems that time will move twice as fast. Here is Fia's take on how to find a bit of grace around this in her essay this week: a different way of self care...
