What Have We Been Up To?

Hello, readers! The month of February for ARC has been involved primarily in focusing on creating a better effort towards our community. We have made an effort to listen to our audiences and local businesses that share our goals in order to brainstorm ways that we can create a larger reach to our community. Since the month of February is the month of love and affection, ARC would like you to know that without you our dreams for the future would not be possible. Thank you for all of your patience and never-ending support.

A Brief History of Alcohol

If you walk into just about any history class on Valentine's day, at least a portion of the class discussion will involve the history of Valentine's day. So being so well versed in that particular story, as I'm sure you were all paying attention, I think we should stray away from the talk of Russian lovers and think about how one of the world's most dangerous substances has evolved in its particular uses over a long period of time. In other words, here is a brief history of alcohol for your inner nerd.

Fermented beverages first appeared in early Egyptian civilizations. In the scientific field, these fermented beverages were often consisting of grain, fruit juice, and honey and was considered different from an alcoholic beverage. The first alcohol beverage appeared in China around 7000 B.C. In India, an alcoholic beverage called "sura", distilled from rice, was in use between 3000 and 2000 B.C.

Alcoholic beverages had soon spread across the world with new transformations in production, uses, and tastes. In 2700 B.C., the Babylons worshiped a wine goddess. In Greece, one of the first alcoholic beverages to gain popularity was mead, a fermented drink made from honey and water. Fun fact: Greek literature is full of warnings against excessive drinking.

New Ideas and New Adventures

If you are just starting your journey into sobriety, you may have had some difficulties thinking of fun and romantic things to do with your date that doesn't involve alcohol. Have no fear! There a lots of things you can do to show your significant other how you feel without feeling pressured to be in an environment that may be uncomfortable. Here are some of our favorite dates:

1. The classic dinner-and-a-movie date - Try switching up the order and go to the movie before dinner. better yet, you and your partner could decide on a movie you both wouldn't normally go to. This will give you some places to strike up conversation later at dinner.

2. Pack a picnic and pick a spot - this is a chance to show your partner somewhere they've never been before!

3. Cook something together and play a board game - Cooking can be a great bonding and often a romantic experience. You guys get to pick out your favorite dishes and get a little messy with the ingredients. Playing a board game is a great way to end the night with a laugh and maybe even some playful bragging rights.

4. Go on a day hike - Take an adventure together and explore what nature has to offer! Take a trip on the romantic side of exercise and getting outside. Nature is full of romantic moments.

We are starting a new trend on all of our social media sites, as well as in our own personal lives! By joining us in celebrating your Saturdays by staying sober, you are encouraging others within your community to follow in your footsteps towards an addiction-free community!
THINGS TO AVOID WHEN HELPING A LOVED ONE WITH ADDICTION
 
1. Don't preach.
2.
Don't cover up, lie, or make excuses for them or their behavior.
3.
Don't argue when the other is using. Arguing with a person when they are using alcohol or drugs is not helpful; At that point, they may not be able to have a rational conversation.
4.
Don't assume their responsibilities: This protects them from the consequences of their behavior. 
5.
Don't feel guilty. It's not your fault.
