What's Inside

Loaves and Fishes Dishes up Summer Meals

With summer in full swing, Loaves & Fishes has been greeted by fresh and familiar faces alike. Eager volunteers have been busy helping out the Loaves & Fishes staff, but there also has been an influx of younger guests; children! During the summer time many children are seen accompanying their family member(s)  to our hot-lunch program to enjoy a healthy, delicious lunch.

"We want children to grow up strong and healthy -
they might grow up to do something great."
- A First Grade Student

Loaves & Fishes works closely with our partner farms and agencies to provide the community with the freshest, healthiest food options.  We understand the importance of a healthy meal and realize that during summer months, many children may not have access to healthy mid-day meals outside of school.

Local children enjoy fresh fruit for dessert at lunch time.

According the USDA, many low income children, who normally receive free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch during the school year, are at risk for hunger during the summer time. Hunger is one of the most severe roadblocks to the learning process, setting up a cycle for poor school performance, illness and other health issues. Loaves and Fishes nourishes the future of our community, filling that nutrition gap and welcoming our younger visitors with warm smiles and healthy foods.

Saturday September 19th 5pm-9pm

We invite you to join us for our 12th Annual Empty Bowls dinner and auction!  Since 1989, our Kitchen and Pantry Programs have provided nutritious food to the hungry people in our community. Our theme this year, “Farm to Pantry”, will highlight the local farmers and other heroes who feed us all.

Dick Peixoto, owner of Lakeside Organic Gardens,
the nation's largest family-owned and operated solely organic vegetable grower and shipper,
joins us as our Honorary Chair for the evening.

Pajaro Dunes, one of our generous sponsors, provides the location for this event at the beautiful Shorebirds Lagoon House on Saturday, September 19, 2015, from 5 to 9 pm. Each guest will select a beautiful, one-of-a-kind bowl created by a local artist especially for our event. Our guests will enjoy live music,
fine wines, gourmet appetizers, scrumptious salads and soups, and delightful desserts along with
exquisite silent and live auction items.

Celebrate with our friends and generous donors who provide time, fresh produce, groceries and much needed funds. Enjoy drinks from local vineyards and dinner incorporating locally-sourced foods. Volunteer Spotlight

Our June Volunteer of the Month is a very sweet, generous young woman named Brittany Loisel!

Brittany (purple sweater) poses front and center surrounded by
her Loaves and Fishes Family.

Brittany first came to Loaves & Fishes during the Holiday season of 2014. Brittany and her husband wanted to give back for the holidays and, after a quick Google search, they found themselves at Loaves & Fishes. After her Christmas-time volunteer experience Brittany was hooked on volunteering and decided to make Friday afternoons her regular weekly volunteer shift. Ever since her first volunteer shift, Brittany has been here almost every Friday. We have truly seen her open up, become comfortable, and come to love her time at Loaves & Fishes. Brittany helps with a variety of tasks from cleaning up after our daily hot noontime meal to chopping vegetables and chicken that will be used in meals for the following week.

When asked about her favorite part of volunteering Brittany said she really appreciates how nice and friendly everyone is. Serving her community and the warm, friendly faces here at Loaves & Fishes are what keep Brittany coming back, Friday after Friday, and we are so grateful! Thank you so much for all you give to Loaves & Fishes, Brittany!
