Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes

"An act to make another happy
inspires the other to make still another happy,
and so happiness is aroused and abounds.
Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle,
and the life of the single candle will not be shortened.
Happiness never decreases by being shared."

Home Meals for the Holidays

The yearly ritual of enjoying the holidays can nearly be understood universally. A supportive community, delicious food, and rest and relaxation are a few things that many folks look forward to during the holiday season to revive their spirits as the days become shorter. We recognize, however, that for many of our clients, the only place that the treasures of the holiday season will be honored is with their community at PV Loaves & Fishes.

This is why we work our hardest to ensure that the families and individuals we serve have the resources needed to celebrate this time together, whether joining us for their holiday lunch or taking home a holiday food basket to prepare a meal together.

With the help of our own community, PVLF continues to pro
vide the magic of the holidays for others. This year, we will purchase over 800 whole chickens and turkeys to distribute to local families, provide fresh, festive meals for over 500 people in our lunch program, and, through our partnership with Toys for Tots, distribute new toys to over 650 local children.

We thank our supporters for making this possible. Generous hearts come together each year to spark true spirit at Loaves and Fishes. The holidays give us a chance to express our gratitude and recognize the rich meaning behind something as simple as a good meal.

This community keeps our work strong. You can continue stewarding our valuable work by volunteering at one of our holiday events, or making your year-end gift to support the sustainability of our programs.

Again, thank you truly for your support, and your heroism in the fight against hunger.

Mobile Clinic

As of November of this year, our organization has been placed on Dominican Mobile Wellness Clinic's monthly route!

Last month, the mobile clinic nurses made their first visit to Loaves and Fishes and were amazed to see the large number of people they are able to reach through their new partner site. With nearly 200 households accessing our services every Monday through Friday, the Dominican Mobile Clinic can now access thousands of new families they were not previously reaching.

On Friday, December 11, Dominican nurses administered over a dozen flu shots, performed over 50 health screenings, and referred some of our clients to the local clinic because of previously unidentified health risks. According to clinic personnel, sometimes, especially at a new location in Watsonville,
people who haven't seen a doctor in years seize
the opportunity for a check up.

"I had to send two clients immediately to the clinic,"
said a Dominican nurse on Friday.
"They had high blood sugar, and had never been screened".

Now that Loaves and Fishes is a part of the Mobile Clinic's monthly route, we look forward to further help people identify paths to healthier, happier lives.

We look forward to all of the progress to come, and thank Dominican Mobile Clinicfor their valuable work and partnership!

Giving Thanks to a Dedicated Volunteer

Our wonderful volunteer Patrick Sigler is featured in Santa Cruz County Volunteer Center's "Volunteer Spotlight"!
His dedication to the Loaves and Fishes' kitchen this holiday season is outstandingly admirable, and we couldn't be more grateful to have his support.

“It’s great to give back to some of our community members who are not as privileged as others might be. I enjoy prepping quality, healthy food for others; we use fresh fruits and vegetables and avoid including any desserts to keep the meal as nutritious as possible. People might not be able to find healthy meals elsewhere, so it’s great to see that we can make that a little bit more accessible. Having been in food service for 35 years, it is nice to be able to give back. I have past experience to bring to PV Loaves and Fishes that others might not have– I can come in and teach the other chefs something they might not know, and they can teach me things, and in the end, we collectively put out a great product."

Construction Has Started!

In the next few weeks, Loaves and Fishes will undergo some significant transformations!  The upgrades include a new ADA compliant ramp for the front of our building, new energy efficient windows,a new paint job around the house, and a protective awning for our lunch service line.

A first look at some new paint on the back of the PVLF house!

This is all able to happen thanks to generous community support and an amazingly successful Empty Bowls in 2015.

Demolition for our new ramp has started!

We thank YOU for allowing all of these goals to be realized-
please stay tuned for more updates on these terrific upgrades!

New Lunch Hours

Help us spread the word!

On January 1st, 2016, Loaves and Fishes will change our lunch service hours from 12-2pm to 12-1pm. This change is to allow for more time to clean-up and do meal prep in our kitchen,
so as to continue to serve the highest quality
meals in our lunch program.

Even while our lunch numbers continue to grow, with more new faces joining us every day, over 90% of our participants are served within the first 30 minutes of our lunch service. For this reason, we do not anticipate this change in hours to severely affect the accessibility of our services.

We appreciate your support and suggestions on how to best serve our community. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Kristal at 831-319-4570 or email
director@pvloavesandfishes.org.
