 PVLF Spring Reception
A Success!

On Wednesday, April 29th, Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes hosted it's very first Spring Reception. A public event, PVLF opened it's doors to community friends and supporters for a wonderful evening of celebration and community. Guests started with a self-guided tour of our facilities and our newly acquired photo gallery, and enjoyed wine and artisan appetizers prepared by local chef Jesse Placencia. The program was kicked off by Interim City Manager Marcela Tavantzis, who is long time advocate and supporter of Loaves and Fishes. Later, a few PVLF volunteers and lunch clients stood to address the group about their connections to our programs. Long-time donor Ron Manabe wrapped up the evening, with a humorous anecdote about giving. We then revealed our new logo! It was a heart-felt evening of celebration and enthusiasm for
Loaves and Fishes' Hunger Fighting work.

We thank all of you who came to show your support of our hugely successful event, and we hope you enjoyed learning about the
impact which you help us make in the community.
We hope to see you again next year!

Community leaders and PVLF supporters network while waiting for the start of our program.

Volunteer Ralph Cistaro and his partner Sydney enjoy the evening.
Ralph volunteers every Tuesday and Thursday, organizing and delivering thousands of pounds of produce every week

Lunch client Lily shares her story with the group.
"I don't know where I would be without Loaves and Fishes."
Lily joins us for lunch time every Monday through Friday, as well as receives a food basket to feed her family during the holidays

Lunch client Barry Martinsen shares his story.
"It's hard being homeless because at most places, they just chop up some iceberg lettuce and throw it on a plate. Not this place."
Barry is working in our community garden to grow tomatoes to use in our kitchen.

Volunteer Spotlight

Our April volunteer of the month is a wonderful, sweet woman named Eugenia.

Eugenia initially came to Loaves & Fishes as a client of our Pantry Program five years ago. She was working in the fields, harvesting raspberries, and needed the supplemental nutrition that Loaves & Fishes provides. Vicky Caballero, our Pantry Manager, asked Eugenia to help her in the Pantry, and she agreed. Eugenia spent a couple of years volunteering in the Pantry when she was not working in the raspberry fields, and then slowly made the shift to working in the kitchen.

Eugenia has been an all-around excellent volunteer for Loaves & Fishes. We can always count on her to be supportive and to know what needs to be done to serve the 150 people that we feed every day. When asked about her favorite part of being a volunteer with Loaves & Fishes, she says that it is spending time in the Kitchen with her friends. In the last six months, Eugenia has become especially good friends with another volunteer, a woman named Bertha. Bertha works with us through Peninsula Family Services, which is an organization that places elderly volunteers in various nonprofits and pays them a small stipend for their time. Initially, Head Chef Maria had chosen both Bertha and Josie, another woman employed by Peninsula Family Services, as the volunteers of the month.

When these two woman were informed that they had been chosen, they immediately declined, and instead insisted that Eugenia be selected as the Volunteer of the Month. This kind of sweet, caring relationship is exactly the kind of community that we strive to cultivate here at Loaves & Fishes; one in which your fellow friend always comes before yourself. The friendship that Eugenia, Bertha, and Josie have created is a beautiful example of this.
We truly appreciate all of the time and effort Eugenia has given to Loaves & Fishes. Her strong, sweet presence helps all who work with her to feel at ease, and she is just one of the many pieces of the puzzle that come together to serve our mission of feeding those in need in the Pajaro Valley and beyond. Muchas gracias, Eugenia! We could not do it without you.
