"Volunteers are love in motion."

Dear <<First Name>>,

The meaning behind Spring is embodied by Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes year round.

Here, we are lucky enough to witness individuals blossom, lighting up our lives just like Springtime buds. Lives are transformed under our very eyes, and many times, those lives turn out to be our own.

It's the shy, closed-off teenager who learns to work in a team. It's the young mother who learns new skills to find a job. It's the elderly man who needs a new purpose and way to contribute his talents.

Loaves and Fishes is a vibrant, supportive community- ever moving, always changing- where people learn and are inspired to grow to their full potential.

I invite you to our Spring Reception on April 29th to experience these changes, and hear the stories for yourself.

I invite you to share a family recipe with families in our pantry, or create your very own in our kitchen.

As a community supported program, we thank you for your contributions which help make this place so special.

We look forward to continuing to grow together.

Yours in Service,

Loaves and Fishes Team

Recipe of the Month
Mexican Style Sauteed Greens

PVLF receives beautiful bunches of kale, chard, and other nutritious leafy greens from our local farmers. When it came to our attention that many of our pantry clients did not know what these vegetables were or how to use them, our response was to create this recipe. Leafy greens are some of most nutrient dense plant foods, bringing high amounts of calcium and vitamins A, C, and K to the plate. Enjoy, and let us know how it turned out!

Volunteer Spotlight

Volunteer Paul Perenti, who suffers from early-onset Alzheimer's, is accompanied by Eric Hofman, and Daniel Cristiano, who together, donate dozens
of hours a week to Loaves and Fishes.

This month, we are honoring not just one, but three volunteers as Volunteer of the Month, because they could not do what they do for Loaves and Fishes without the support of each other.

Paul Parenti, Eric Hoffman, and Daniel Cristancho are three very special men. In September of 2013, Paul started as a volunteer with Loaves and Fishes out of the kindness of his own heart. Unfortunately, Paul suffers from early-onset Alzheimer’s, but this has never affected his desire to support Loaves and Fishes in any way that he can. For a full year, Paul came on his own as a volunteer for Loaves and Fishes. In September of last year, it was brought to the attention of various staff that Paul might need a partner to volunteer alongside him to ensure that he is working to his full potential. After a few phone calls, two men, Eric Hoffman and Daniel Cristancho started to come with Paul to volunteer.

Over the last six months, the staff at Loaves & Fishes have watched Paul, Eric, and Daniel grow not only as a unit, but as individuals. All three of them have become integral to the organization and function of our Pantry Program, as they have mastered our Pantry Storage Room. This is the area that the group spends most of their volunteer hours, and because of this they have not only learned but also supported in the further creation of a “fool-proof” system. When Daniel and Paul leave, we can rest assured not only that we have more than enough bags and boxes of groceries for the following day, but also that all of the shelves are fully stocked – and to a T! Eric, on the other hand, is our organizational master. When we receive large amounts of “salvage food” from the Second Harvest Food Bank, Eric manages to organize all of it, even though it is the widest variety of food one could possibly imagine. Eric also had the simple yet brilliant idea of posting photos of exactly what is to be packed in each grocery bag for all of our visual learner volunteers, and the difference has been incredible!

We are truly grateful to each of these three men and for what they do for Loaves & Fishes. Just as they have nearly perfected the system of our Pantry Storage Room, the three of them also function as a nearly perfect system – they could not do all that they do without each other, and we could not serve our mission to feed those in need in the Pajaro Valley without them!

Thank you, Paul, Eric, and Daniel! Your presence at Loaves & Fishes is a joy every day.
