Local Government Professionals SA Excellence Awards -
Renmark Paringa Council wins the Leadership
in Community Services Award!

On Friday 17 April, Renmark Paringa Council won the Leadership in Community Services Award at the '2015 Local Government Leadership Excellence Awards' for the ‘RiverLife – Get into it!’ Project.
We are very proud to receive this Award as it recognises Council’s 10 plus years of commitment to improving the health and well being of our community.
None of this however would have been possible without the vision, hard work and dedication of the following people;
•CEO Tony Siviour
•Jannene Graham
•Adrian Pipe
•Carmel Pethick
•Apryl Smith
•Stephanie Coughlin
•Sally Martin
•The RiverLife Steering Committee
•Councillor Peter Hunter who chaired the Steering Committee
•Emma Warner and Poppy Papageorgiou
•The various community members who volunteered their time to the project

It has been an amazing journey and that has seen us;
•Engage with over 2,200 people –over 20% of our population
•Have participants from as far away as Lameroo, Ceduna and even Sydney
•Enable Muslim women as old as 60 to swim for the very first time
•Teach Afghani men how to ride a bicycle
•Support over 1,300 locals to achieve 10,000 steps per day – people still tap there hip when we see them on the streets, to show us that they are still wearing their pedometer.

This Award just gives us even more motivation to continue working with our community as we strive to build a healthier, more sustainable community. If you would like to see the award for yourself, it can be viewed at the Renmark Paringa Community and Civic Centre.

Recent Works in the Community
At Renmark Paringa Council we take great pride in our towns and are continuously striving to make them the most stunning along the River Murray.
In 2014 we held a community consultation to choose a location for a public toilet in Jane Eliza to improve the function/usability of that area. This work has recently finished and we wanted to share the progress with you and encourage you to use the facility at your leisure.

Did you attend the ANZAC Day services in Renmark this year and wonder where all the beautiful poppies came from? Well the project began in October 2014 and was a Community Project called the 'Anzac Day 2015 Centenary Commemoration Poppies Project' and was inspired by the '5,000 Poppies Project'.

The Craft and Knitting group of the Chaffey Community Centre, namely Paula Simmons and Judy Watkins were instrumental in getting this community project for the Commemoration of the 100 years since Anzac off the ground.
The RSL and a number of community groups and individuals, including Renmark Paringa Council, along with local craft groups and individuals, school children, and their parent/carer made felt poppies.  All of the handcrafted poppies were attached onto wire sticks by RSL volunteers and displayed at the Renmark ANZAC Day ceremony. Wooden crosses (representing the amount of Renmark Paringa people who lost their lives in WW1) from the Canberra War Memorial were inscribed by local school children with messages of thanks and remembrance and then lined the footpath surrounding the Cross of Sacrifice in Renmark.  These crosses will now be sent back to Canberra, where the War Memorial will arrange for them to be laid throughout the Centenary period on war graves and memorials where Australian servicemen and women are buried in countries such as Turkey, France, Belgium, Malaysia, Singapore, Greece, South Africa and the Middle East.
Council would like to thank the many people involved in this wonderful community project.

As always thank you to everyone for all your incredible hard work in organising all these wonderful events, activities and ideas; it makes our community a vibrant place to be!
