What's going on in your community

In this edition:

Welcome to 2015!
Renmark Paringa Council are looking forward to working with the community on a number of exciting projects this year.
We are proud of the outcomes of the Renmark Town Revitalisation project, the new public toilet at the Tower Tavern lawns and our involvement in the Made in Riverland workshops (which is set to grow further in 2015).
We will continue to increase our engagement with the community and during this coming year we will be coming to you, to get your opinions and thoughts on the following topics :
  • Tracks and Trails Strategy - this is currently open for consultation until 13 February 2015. Go to our website for details of how to get involved and have your say (insert weblink to website). Importantly we encourage you to get involved in assisting us to implement this Strategy once adopted by Council, so everyone can enjoy exploring our district and being more active.
  • Open Space Strategy – help inform us what you would like to see in our parks, gardens, ovals and informal open space areas over the next 15 years.
  • Economic Development Strategy – what strategies do you think Council should be focussing on to grow our economy, create jobs and build a sustainable population? Have you seen strategies which have worked in other communities which have achieved these goals? We would love to hear from you if you have!
It was a pleasure to see so many people from the community showing their support by attending the recent Australia Day Breakfast. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the valuable work done by those in our community. We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful region and to have so many people in our community who strive to enhance it and develop it. In particular we would like to congratulate the following people for their contribution in 2014;
  • Community Event of the Year - Chowilla Station 150th Celebrations - Kerrie and James Robertson
  • Citizen of the Year - Alan McLean, and
  • Young Citizen of the Year - Jackson Wickham

We would also like to congratulate the Riverland Dinghy Derby for another action packed event on the weekend, and in particular for attracting Red Bull Australia as a new sponsor. It’s wonderful to see the rest of the world catching up on what a great place the Renmark Paringa district is to live, work and play.
Council has many events and activities planned for the remainder of the year. Most notably we are happy to announce that we will be bringing back Rivafest on April 18 which aims to celebrate our fantastic food and wine in the region whilst listening to some great music along our stunning riverfront. We have been very fortunate to secure 2013 Australia’s Got Talent winner “Uncle Jed” to kick start the rejuvenated Rivafest event.
Tickets for this event will be limited so get in quick by contacting the Renmark Paringa Visitor Information Centre on 8586 6704.  We will also be staging our many other community events such as our School Holiday Programs, Youth Programs, Riverfront markets and training programs through the Chaffey Community Centre and Library.

We hope to see you at one of the many community events in the coming year and look forward to building a strong and sustainable future with you.

Save Pensioner Concessions on Rates....
In June 2014 the Commonwealth Government cut funding to the State Government for pensioner and other concessions amounting to $27m.
The State Government has maintained concessions on Council rates paid under the SA Parliament's Rates and Land Act 1986 ($34m) this financial year. However it has announced that it will stop concessions on rates from July 1 2015.
We estimate that next year's rates, for most people currently eligible for a concession, will include a "bill shock" of around 20% without the concession.
Council is opposed to the Federal cut and is also oposing the State Government's decision to abolish concessions on Council rates.
Help us to help our most vulnerable to retain their concession payments.
To support your Council's aim to reverse this desicion, please contact your local member of Parliament - go to: or alternatively phone direct;
Federal - Tony Pasin MP on 85312466
State - Tim Whetstone MP on 85824230.
Town Works/Upgrades....
Have you seen the new public toilet block at the Tower Tavern riverfront? We held a public consultation meeting on the morning of October 25 2014 and had 19 community members attend. Through this consultation process we were able to choose a location for the public toilet to be built on which suited residents and users of that space.
Have you seen works being carried out at the Renmark Health and Fitness Centre and wondered what was happening? The building itself is owned by Council and we are in the process of building a new sealed car park which will be finished in the near future.

Interested as to when Hungry Jacks will be coming to Renmark? It has been confirmed that construction at the 'On the Run' site is expected to commence in the second week of February. Council encourages everyone to select from a variety of food choices come meal time and recommend that all food groups which have a higher fat/sugar content be consumed in moderation.
Tracks and Trails Strategy....
Have you heard about the 'Tracks and Trails Strategy' for the Renmark Paringa area? Public consultation for the construction of a $55,000 tracks and trails network in the Renmark Paringa Lyrup area is currently open.
We kindly ask you to please read through the document which can be found online through our website or as a hard copy in the Renmark Paringa Community & Civic Centre, Eighteenth Street, Renmark and direct your feedback to the Manager of Community Services, Adrian Pipe, at or 85803000. The closing date for feedback has been extended to Friday February 13 at 5pm. We look forward to hearing from you.
Rate due on March 3rd....
Please note that rates are due on March 3 2015. BPAY is the preferred and cheapest option of payment and if you would like more information on that method of payment or others which may suit you better please go to our website for more details.
Rivafest is back and will be held on Saturday April 18 between 11am to 6pm on Renmark's beautiful Riverfront. Rivafest will showcase the Riverland’s best local produce through its food and beverages and will also include local music artists to support our headline act ‘Uncle Jed’ - Winner of the 2013 Australia’s Got Talent.  Confirmed stall holders are Wilkadene Brewery, Angove’s, Caudo Vineyard, Pego’s Pizza and European Cuisine.  For more information contact the Renmark Paringa Visitor Information Centre on 8586 6704.
