Mindfulness Sambuca

Dear <<First Name>>,
We all need a survival kit for tapping in to mind space and finding a little pause when your brain is full of unhelpful chatter. But before we get to that bit, let’s just quickly recap what mindfulness is all about.
Mindfulness is a philosophy, behavior or practice that aims to change the way we experience the world. “It’s about changing the way we relate to our experiences, not about changing those experiences”.
Good news, mindfulness can be practiced anywhere, at anytime and by anyone. Sounds easy, right? But still I find I have to keep reMINDing myself to stay present, stay focused and be connected. When I go through life more mindful, I am happier, more content and seem to approach things from a position of clarity.
My mindfulness survival kit is the easy to remember acronym SHOTTS. Perhaps mindfulness light is a better suitable title given it is only really touching the surface of all that mindfulness embodies. Involving all senses it’s a perfect anchoring exercise that you can apply whenever you need a bit of grounding. I’m giving an example below of drinking a cup of coffee. However, this exercise can be applied to all situations. When you are distracted by unhelpful emotions or thoughts then try to use the five SHOTTS.
See. Notice the shape, color, branding of your cup.
Hear. Be fully aware of any sounds around you. People, things, silence, your own breath…
Observe. See below.
Taste. Explore the flavors and sensations, the differences in senses in various parts of your mouth.
Touch. Feel the warmth of the cup against your hands and fingers, it’s weight, form, and texture.  The cup touching your lips - where are the contact points?
Smell. Breath in the smell. Notice also other smells around you.
The O is really the last thing, which is Observe. Observe your emotions. Notice yourself being mindful, without judging, changing or editing. Just notice how you are being fully aware of all your senses. And then importantly notice that you noticed.
Fantasizing is a dangerous activity - wanting to be somewhere else, have something else, be in the past or envisioning something in the future. These alternative realities take you away from the present moment that is your life. When such thoughts arise simply recognize them, then recognize yourself recognizing them. Then re-focus on the physical world. Use SHOTTS to bring you back to the present moment.

Hope you find it useful. I'd love to hear how you get on.
