FSN Race Newsletter

Last week our very first Formula Student event of this season took place, Formula Student Netherlands! From the 17th until the 20th of July our team could be found on the Assen TT Circuit competing with 30 other teams towards victory on the event. In this newsletter we would like to update you about our performance and the final results.
Day 1
The first day
was a busy and successful day for us. We started the day with the Cost & Manufacturing event, where the team had to defend the manufacturability and financial considerations of the car. After this, both electrical and mechanical systems were checked at scrutineering.
The next stop was the tilt test, in which the URE12 was placed at an angle of 60 degrees to check whether all components and fluids stay in place. The test is also to make sure the car does not roll over in sharp corners. Afterwards, a rain test was performed to check if the electrical systems of the car are still functioning in heavy rain.
We ended the day with a brake test, where all wheels have to lock-up when braking at a speed of 50 km/h. This resulted in passing all scrutineering checks in one go. Therefore, we were the first electric team ever to complete scrutineering at Formula Student Netherlands! To conclude the day, we held our business presentation, explaining to the judges how we would create a business case around our car, the URE12.
Day 2
The day started at 8:00 with the preparations for the Engineering Design event. During this event we explained the technical aspects of our car to different judges with specific expertises and tried to convince them of our engineering design choices.
Afterwards, we headed to the practice area where different tests were succesfully conducted as preparation for the dynamic events of the next day consisting of skidpad, acceleration and autocross. To prepare the drivers for autocross they did a track walk with a measuring tool to know what's coming when they get behind the wheel.
Day 3
What a successful day at the TT Circuit Assen! On this day, three of the dynamic events took place: the skidpad, acceleration and autocross. In these events two drivers were allowed to do two runs each. We started this morning performing an acceleration run where we covered 75 meters from standstill in only 3.32 seconds!
Afterwards we headed to the pit to change the slicks to rain tires, while the control group started analyzing the data of the performed acceleration runs to squeeze out even more performance. A little later we arrived at the wetpad. The wet surface makes it even harder to control the car. Here we drove the fastest time of the day!
Back at the pit, we waited for the asphalt to heat up. Meanwhile, the control group changed some parameters for the last two acceleration runs. This resulted in an even faster time of only 3.186 seconds! This was also the fastest time of the day for the acceleration event.
At 14:00, the drivers were fully prepared for the autocross. On this 1 kilometer sprint the drivers could show what they had learned during the trackwalk, resulting in a 3rd place in this spectacular event. After this we performed the final preparations for the endurance of day 4.
Day 4
After a little rain, we were able to start the endurance at around 14:00. We started off successfully with our first driver Max who was driving the laptimes we were aiming for. Unfortunately after the driver change, the car was not able to start, therefore we could not finish the endurance. Currently we are looking into the problem and will learn from it and come back stronger in Formula Student Austria!

Despite this disappointment, the atmosphere during the award ceremony was awesome, taking home trophies for:
1st place Acceleration
1st place Skidpad
1st place Engineering Design
3rd place Autocross
3rd place Overall electric vehicle

Overall a 4th place out of 31 participants was achieved. The available scoring sheets can be found below:

Prospect
The URE12 will compete in two more competitions: Formula Student Austria and Formula Student Spain. To conclude, we would like to thank all our partners, supporters and family. Without all of you this amazing event would not have been possible. We will keep you posted about our performance and please follow our social media channels for more information!
