Please join us for our upcoming AGM.  This annual meeting is the space where your ideas are taken to action.  You could choose to present yourself for an annual board position, you could submit a resolution to be voted on at the meeting, or you could come to share in the dialogue on important farm issues.  However you choose to engage yourself, I hope to meet you there!

Local Food Security Bill

The NFU-NB has been working for local food security legislation for many years, asking for a policy that will support farmers in the work that they do.  Thanks to the recent work of MLA David Coon, there is a Local Food Security Bill before the legislature right now.  Read the bill here.  The NFU-NB sent a letter to the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Rick Doucet, expressing our support for this bill.  The bill will undergo its second reading in mid-March.  We will continue to express our support for this legislation on behalf of all NFU-NB members.  You can also get involved by contacting your MLA directly and letting them know how important is to you.  Find your MLA's email by clicking here.

New Farmer Survey

The National New Farmer Coalition and the University of Manitoba have put together a survey to assess the needs of new farmers in Canada where it concerns policy and educational opportunities. If you are intending to farm, are currently farming, or have recently exited farming, we want to hear from you! The results from this survey will be used to develop a National New Farmer Policy Platform that we aim to share with all levels of government. It will also document the sources of new farmer learning and make suggestions on how to improve this training in Canada. In order to give weight to our recommendations, we need as many farmer voices as possible.
Click here to participate in the survey and be entered to win great prizes (25-45 minutes)

Dollars and Sense: Opportunities to Strengthen Southern Ontario's Food System

Published in January 2015, this report offers many ideas and for NB. Click on the image above to see the full report.  Here are some highlights:
  • Reducing the top 10 fruit and vegetable imports by 10 per cent and expanding local production would help create 3,400 jobs and boost the province’s GDP by nearly a quarter billion dollars.
  • Ontarians adopting a healthier diet leads to higher consumer demand for fruits, vegetables, and some grains. For example, if consumers moved to an ideal level of oat consumption in their diets, 241 jobs would be created and the province’s GDP would grow by more than $14.2 million.
