Midway Center & Stadium Updates

The City has convened a Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) to provide community input on the site plan for a major league soccer stadium and the master plan for redevelopment of the 34.5 acre superblock. CAC meetings are open to the public, but only CAC members participate in the discussion. To voice your opinion and see what others think, visit the City's Open Saint Paul forum by December 13.

Union Park District Council has a task force that is also collecting resident input. The task force will be reporting on its recommendations to our Land Use Committee at its meeting on December 14th from 6:30-8:30 at the Merriam Park Recreation Center. These meetings are open to the public and you are welcome to join the conversation. Check out our task force site and our stadium update for more information.

Our Year in Review

We have been working hard to listen to you and inform you about important issues in our community.  Here's a snapshot of some of our year's highlights:

After collecting over 5000 opinions expressed in engagement activities, we have completed a draft of our ten-year community plan.

We have a new website to better inform you about what's happening in our community, and we've had more than 1700 site visits since its September launch.

We've had more than 2000 residents participate in the several meetings and events -- including Bastille Day on Selby and Ice Cream, Peanut Butter and Jam in Merriam Park -- that we've held to build community and have your voices heard.

We strive to provide relevant and timely information on our Union Park Facebook page, with some posts exceeding 4000 people reached. Like us to help us reach 1000 followers in 2016!

Gift bags for new supporters

As you plan your end-of-year giving, please consider making a donation to Union Park. We rely on grants and donations from residents like you!

Give at least $30 to Union Park and you’ll be a lucky owner of these gifts: a $10 Whole Foods gift card, a reusable Whole Foods shopping bag, a Limited Edition Union Park t-shirt, snacks & sodas, a pedestrian-friendly bumper magnet, and a Saint Paul Almanac wall map. Just put “New Donor” on your check and mail to 1602 Selby Avenue Suite 10, 55104. Hurry--gift bag supplies are limited! Thank you for your support.

Vintage on Selby Update

Welcome to our new Union Park neighbors who moved into the Vintage on Selby on December 1st! There are now 41 occupied apartments in the building. More residents will be moving in each month; as of today, 83 leases have been secured, which is 40% of the total number of apartments. The building's lobby is open to the public, so feel free to stop by and check it out.

The Whole Foods Market is slated to open its doors to customers on March 16th.

Midway YMCA to open early January 2016

Santa's Workshop at the Landmark Center

Get into the holiday spirit at Landmark Center on Sunday, December 11th from 1 to 3 pm.  At this free event, families will enjoy holiday storytelling, festive music, complimentary hot cider and cookies, and a craft to create gift items for their loved ones. Be sure to bring your camera to take a photo with Santa!

Guests of Santa’s Workshop are invited to bring a non perishable food item to donate to the Hallie Q. Brown Food Shelf. After Santa's Workshop, stay downtown to enjoy Rice Park's Winter Wonderland and Wells Fargo WinterSkate located just outside the building.

Local holiday music

The Lex-Ham Community Band will hold its annual December holiday concert at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 20 at Buetow Auditorium in the Music/Fine Arts Building at Concordia University, 310 N Hamline Avenue. This free event will feature music of the season with some sing-alongs, so come prepared to sing.  There will likely be treats to eat, too. See the Lex-Ham Band site for details about the band.

Also, watch for carolers in the Saint Thomas area on Monday, December 14th, when UST's Undergraduate Student Government and members of Festival Choir, Cadenza, and the Summit Singers will be out in the neighborhood for a night of caroling.

Safe Sidewalk Reminders

Saint Paul City ordinances require that snow and ice be removed from sidewalks within 24 hours of a snow event. So, please clear off your sidewalks, and arrange for someone to do it for you when you plan to be away.  Sidewalks covered with snow and ice are especially unsafe for seniors and people with disabilities.
If the City receives a complaint about your property, you will be contacted and asked to clear the sidewalk as soon as possible. If the sidewalk is not cleared, the City will send a crew to clear the sidewalk—and you’ll get the bill for the work.
Print out these door hangers to remind neighbors or tenants to shovel. Encounter a particularly slippery sidewalk? Call the Department of Safety and Inspections at 651-266-8989 to report the address.

Holiday Safety

The Western District of the Saint Paul Police Department has noticed an uptick in package thefts from residences. If you know you won't be home for a delivery, consider having the package sent to your office or a neighbor's home, so it is not left sitting outside.

If you plan to travel for the holidays, contact Vacation Watch at 651-266-5485. The Police Department will have reserve officers check your property while you are away.

Smart Trash

Interested in learning more about how to improve how trash is handled in Saint Paul? Smart Trash Saint Paul is a campaign to address how we can change the way we manage our waste -- for the better.

Macalester-Groveland Community Council is presenting on their final report regarding what they learned after a series of community meetings and interviews with stakeholders in 2015. The meeting will be on December 9th at 7 p.m. at Macalester College in the Smail Gallery of Olin Rice Science Center in Room 250.
