Soccer stadium update

The Saint Paul City Council public hearing on the Snelling-Midway Redevelopment site master plan and stadium site plan is on Wednesday, August 3, at 5:30 p.m., City Hall, Room 300, 15 West Kellogg. Information can be reviewed at

Public comments will be heard at the hearing. Comments can also be submitted via email to Kady Dadlez at or at 651-266-6619.

Based on community feedback, Union Park has advocated for local business retention and attraction, affordable housing, a community liaison and community fund to address adverse impacts, and the integration of a broad mix of people and cultures into a vibrant mixed-use community. We have also recently established a new working group to continue to address issues of importance to residents. Feel free to reach out to with questions.

Pop-Up Adventure Play

Join us on Saturday, August 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Pop-Up Adventure Play at Dunning Park (1221 Marshall Ave). Children are welcome to come explore, imagine, and create their own playground, using provided items including cardboard, wood, fabric, paint and more. Adventure Play staff will be on site, but children direct the play. We hope to see you at this free event!

Rent Block Party Barricades from Union Park

The City of St. Paul now charges $143 to rent barricades to close the street for a block party (with the exception of National Night Out). We want to promote the community building that comes with block parties, so we are renting barricades for $40. Our barricades are available on a first come, first served basis to residents who have already applied for a block party permit.

Our barricades are used in pairs with caution tape between them. They are approved for block party use, but are not appropriate adjacent to higher traffic streets. To reserve, call (651) 645-6887 or email us. An $80 refundable deposit is required.

Block Watch training

Our Neighborhood Involvement Committee will be hosting a Block Watch and block club training on Wednesday, August 10 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Spruce Tree Centre (1600 University Ave).

Pam McCreary, the Crime Prevention Specialist for the Western District of the St. Paul Police Department, is the guest speaker. Come learn strategies for keeping your neighborhood more safe, and get some helpful tips on starting a block club in your area. Bring your crime-related questions for Pam to answer!

Tool Lending Library

A group of local volunteers is getting closer to establishing a tool lending library in the Midway area of our community. This example of the sharing economy makes tools more accessible to residents and builds community. Come to the launch event at Lake Monster Brewing from 6-8 p.m. on August 16 to learn more and donate to the cause. Check out the project Facebook page for more information, and contact us to get involved.

Prior Bridge update and celebration

The Prior Avenue bridge over I-94 was built in 1966 and had reached the end of its lifespan. The new bridge, which is slated to open in late August, will have decorative railing and ornamental lighting similar to other bridges in Saint Paul.

MnDOT plans to host a community celebration at the new Prior Bridge on Wednesday, August 31st from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Plan to stop by for refreshments and fun, and meet some MnDOT staff who work on projects in our community.

For updated information on bridge closures and detours, check out the MnDOT project site

Community Puppet Shows

Enjoy a 45 minute long puppet and clown show with live music and original songs for family audiences at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, August 3rd at Dunning Park and at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10th at Aldine Park.

These are outdoor shows, so bring blankets or chairs to set out on the grass. Visit for more information about her On-Time Circus Puppet Show and for other dates and locations.

Ice Cream, Peanut Butter & Jam

Join us for this fourth annual community festival featuring free Izzy’s ice cream, peanut butter for the food shelf, and jamming to local folk music on September 17th from noon to 4 p.m. at Merriam Park (2000 St. Anthony Ave). We'll have kids activities, local artists, businesses and organizations, food trucks, and more. Come connect with neighbors, enjoy the beauty of Merriam Park, and don’t forget your peanut butter donation. Three local bands, Eli’s Sons, Joy and Jovi, and Nomad will be playing at the event.

Movie in the Park

St. Paul Parks and Recreation is hosting a free family-friendly event this Friday, August 5 at Merriam Park (2000 St. Anthony Ave). Games and activities start at 7:00 p.m., and the film "Heavyweights" will begin at dusk. There will be refreshments for sale, but bring you blankets or chairs and bug spray! Call 651-298-5766 for more information.

Recycling Improvements

Starting in 2017, the City has a new contract with Eureka to collect residential recycling. Watch for changes that make recycling more convenient and accessible: city-owned, wheeled, lidded carts that will be delivered to your home; alley collection where feasible; the collection of additional materials; and new geo location technology to track participation and tonnage. The City anticipates these changes will result in a 35% increase in tons collected and a 15% increase in participation. For more information, check out the City's All In page and Eureka Recycling

Join the Fun at Oromo Week!
