What's happening at Newman: Service

Hi, Newman alumni!

Newman's Service Committee started a few events this year. We hosted a Halloween Social and Valentine's Social for the kids and adults from the Kirksville Life Ability Center. Our guests had an amazing time, and our volunteers greatly enjoyed their company. We hope future Service Committees continue to reach out to create fun events for the Life Center in the future.

We greatly appreciate the generosity of the Newman community for donating food and hygiene items for our local community in need. We have regular weekly donations that help to feed people who come to Hope's Kitchen on Saturdays. We look forward to helping at Hope's Kitchen a few more times this year serving meals on Saturday mornings. Soon we will hold a hygiene drive on campus to give away free baked goods and ask for change donations.

We helped Mary Immaculate host another successful Sweetheart Dinner benefit dinner fundraiser. We look forward to supporting Chariton Valley's benefit dinner and silent auction this month.

For our fall service trip, several students served the Kansas City community with the help of Jerusalem Farm opening their home and hearts to us for the week. Coming up, we will host a weekend spring service opportunity in place of the spring service trip. We plan to put together packages for our brothers and sisters who are without homes.

Register now for our Inaugural Newman Alumni Reunion!

Saturday, April 29, 2017
605 Quick Sand Cir, Columbia, MO

Bring the whole family and catch up with friends you haven't seen in "forever." We'll gather at alumna JoAnn (Jorgevan) Shull's house for a potluck BBQ with plenty of space for the kids to run around. St. Louisans and Kansas Citians, this is the perfect opportunity to meet all of your friends from the other side of the state in the middle (we always say we're going to do it, so let's do it!)

The Alumni Association wants to make this an annual tradition. If you have any suggestions or want to help plan, please email the Membership Committee at

Ashley [pictured third from right] states, "This was taken in the Newman kitchen after the 2013 Awakenings, when we were celebrating my birthday. It's one of my favorite Newman pictures because everyone is showing a different personality."

Q:  How has Newman impacted you in the long term? What did it teach you or what has it brought your life?
A:  To me, Newman was the first place that felt like MY community. It was a place where I felt safe to be myself, to meet new people, and to be as Catholic as I wanted to be. I loved that there were so many different types of people at Newman, but they could all call it their home. I think that Newman was the place that most shaped my sense of self in college, and I’m so grateful for that and for all of the people that I met there.
