What's happening at Newman:
Awakenings Prep!

Hi, Newman alumni!

The Awakenings retreat is just days away on February 17-19, and things are really starting to get exciting around here! Awakenings is a great place for Catholic or other Christian students to spend a weekend away from the busy world of college and spend some time with our Lord and with each other growing in faith.

Our theme this year is “Made for Greatness,” based on the famous quote from Pope Benedict XVI: "The world promises you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness." God has called us to do great things even if we are not the wisest or strongest; we are chosen by him to do great things in this world we live in. We want to show the Awakeners that there is more to this world than being “comfortable,” and it is the love and mercy of Jesus.

Being the rector for Awakenings has easily been one of the most fulfilling experiences since I’ve been in college. I went on my first Awakenings retreat when I was a freshman. I came in not having many friends here at Truman and none at the Newman Center. I left that weekend having one of the best weekends ever, a rekindled flame in my heart, and a new community that welcomed me. That weekend did so much for me, so now as a junior, I wanted to give my time to planning this retreat. I have loved every minute of the preparation, and I can’t wait for the retreat to come!

We want to see as many people come to this retreat as we can. Unfortunately, finances for college students can be rough, and some people might not be able to afford to come on Awakenings. Could you consider sponsoring an Awakener's registration fee? The cost is $40, which covers the student’s food, transportation and sleeping arrangements. This weekend is something we hope anybody can enjoy, and your support could make the difference for someone.

Please keep us all in your prayers, especially this coming weekend!

Save the Date for our Inaugural Newman Alumni Reunion!

April 29, 2017
Columbia, Missouri

Bring the whole family and catch up with friends you haven't seen in "forever." We'll celebrate mass together, then have a potluck BBQ at alumna JoAnn (Jorgevan) Shull's house. St. Louisans and Kansas Citians, this is the perfect opportunity to meet all of your friends from the other side of the state in the middle (we always say we're going to do it, so let's do it!)

The Alumni Association wants to make this an annual tradition. If you have any suggestions or want to help plan, please email the Membership Committee at

The most iconic “Newman” moment you ever witnessed?
Driving back from our service trip to Arizona in Spring 2009, we drove through a terrible snowstorm in Texas. The roads were not great and our fearless leader Amy Eschelbach gave an executive order to Jake Shackelford to lead us in the Rosary. We were late to get dinner (cheese pizza, of course–it was Friday in Lent!) and didn’t arrive to our destination, the University of Tulsa Newman Center, until after 1am. And no one was there…. so we crashed on the floor and headed back to Missouri the next day! Nothing like relying on God to get us home eventually!
