Hello and Happy New Year!

December was a busy but hugely enjoyable month for events at Vicky Park.

We started the month by welcoming families to the Hub Building to make their own Natural Christmas Decorations from natural found materials around Vicky Park.

We danced and sang along with our over 55's at our Festive Tea Dance and we had some great feedback from the Winter Tree Walk hosted by Ken Greenway (Tower Hamlet's Cemetery Park).

On Saturday 10 December we saw a record number of families attend our Family Festive Day with families enjoying live music from The Mary Lowe Swingtet and The Young and Talented School of Stage and Screen as well as making 2017 calendars in our Arts and Craft's Corner and riding on one of our festive fairground rides. Santa even had to make an extra trip to Lapland to collect more presents as we welcomed over 150 excited children to Santa's Grotto!

We ended the year nicely by booing the baddie and cheering the hero with a new event; Panto in the Park. The Panto Bus performed two showings of 'Dick Whittington' to delighted audiences!

Event planning starts early and this month we will be sitting down to plan our new Spring/ Summer community events. Got any ideas? Please do drop us a line and let us know.

We are looking forward you seeing you all at one of our events soon.

A Message from Christine Chaffin (VPFG Volunteer)

Hello and Happy New Year!

We've really notice in the Outdoor Classroom how mild the weather is. We haven't had one day where we had to seek shelter from the weather on a Tuesday or Sunday!  The evidence is in the garden - our lovely grand iris, near the trees on the right, is showing strong new shoots; the fennel is showing beautiful feathery new shoots; and what I thought were brussel sprouts on the ground at Christmas were healthy new shoots of a plant near the path on the left.
The garden is looking tidy but we take care to leave twigs and leaves and ground cover for insects and animals. There is evidence of the bug hotel being used every week! We want to spread the leaf mulch, turn the mixed compost and add some more soil to the raised beds - feeding the soil ready for Spring growing.

We have dozens of pots planted with daffodils and managed to save some tulip bulbs from the squirrels. Soon we can choose spots for the bulbs and plant in the ground.

Sunday 29th January you are welcome to take part in the RSPB birdwatch programme to identify the birds in our garden.  We can make bird food cakes for them too (11am - 1pm). Would you like to come to another Soup & Stories Sunday session? Please ask about future dates.

We are planning the garden for the year - what veg to plant, what structures we can make, where we can add flowers, plant seeds for squashes and build frames for them for the summer.  Also planning activities - I know another cocktail event will be welcome!

Please join me to implement the permaculture principles that will give us a beautiful, sustainable Outdoor Classroom.

Any questions or comments, please send them through to victoriapark@towerhamlets.gov.uk.  We'd love to hear from you!

Volunteers @ Vicky Park
UBS Bank - A huge thank you to the team from UBS who came along to help us with our Festive Tea Dance on Wednesday 7 December 2016. The group did an amazing job of wrapping presents, serving food and refreshments, reading bingo, calling the raffle and even dressing up as Santa Claus. Another small group also decorated our Santa's Grotto ready for our Family Festive Day and did a marvellous job! What a lovely bunch of people they were - we all had a great day!

Christine Chaffin (VPFG) - a massive thank you to Christine who continues to lead weekly volunteer sessions in our Outdoor Classroom. Christine's constant enthusiasm and commitment is an asset to Victoria Park.

We wouldn't be the 'People's Park' without the help of the people!
