IJM Rescues Seven Girls in Cebu
And Arrest Suspected Trafficker
On the evening of Monday, May 5th, 2014, IJM Cebu helped rescue seven girls from the trafficker who was selling them for sex. The youngest only 12 years old.
Earlier this year, an aftercare shelter informed IJM about a trafficking ring that was preying on young children from a particular area of Cebu. IJM developed the case and worked with the Regional Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force to plan the operation. IJM continues to train this anti-trafficking unit and work closely with these officers.
Seven girls were rescued. The girls were under obvious control of an experienced pimp, who worked in popular commercial sex establishments in Cebu.
Early reports suggest that the pimp tricked girls, offering to take them to fun activities, like swimming, and instead selling them for sex. The pimp was arrested in the operation.
The girls are now at HerSpace, a temporary shelter for women and girls who are victims of commercial sex trafficking, where they will stay safe and receive crisis care until they move into a longer term aftercare home.
One IJM staff member on the operation said, “We thank God the abuse of these children has come to an end. There is a ray of hope in these children’s lives now that they have been rescued.”
