When you're doing amazing things, of course, there will be envy. But what you need to understand is envy isn't necessarily hate. It's actually a very intense and passionate form of admiration. Looking at you sideways and wanting what you have isn't the most positive way of showing admiration. But I assure you it's not as bad as it looks.
It's hard for people to acknowledge greatness especially when they feel like such acknowledgment denigrates their progress. Or somehow exposes the lack thereof.
Besides them being a completely socially awkward and wild hater who refuses to give people their roses. There are many reasons why people are reluctant to openly show love. One reason is the stigma of being a ’dick rider.’ This is ridiculous insecurity, a fear of people noticing them noticing you. But because of extreme admiration, they have to say something. A snicker, an unwarranted critique, or one of those passive-aggressive remarks that minimize or discredits you in some capacity.
Some people feel like you beat them to the punch. You ever hear the saying, ’no idea is original?’ It's quite possible that someone has stumbled into your greatness unaware that it would somehow resemble an idea in their head that they have yet to bring to fruition. You may not have just made it happen before them, you quite possibly may have outperformed whatever hypothetical production they imagined.
You’re not only a walking talking proof of concept but also a living breathing sign that they need to step their game up.
There's no real way to combat this. It's really a smile and keep it moving situation. Snide remarks and underhanded compliments should never be rewarded. But what you can do is remember to never be that person. The overt hater covert lover type. If you fuck with what somebodies doing tell them. You have to do a lot to be a dick rider, well beyond positive feedback and a pat on the back. And if you feel like someone beat you to the punch, tell them. They may be willing to help you in some capacity. You may have found the ultimate ally.
So when you see someone looking like they're hating remember this. The opposite of love isn't hate it's indifference.
