Opening up planning permissions

Our first new project for the year is right up our street... perhaps literally.

We'll be working on the initial steps to make residential planning permissions across England available as Open Data, in a project for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Catch up on all the details here.

Freedom of Information

How schoolchildren's data was used to support the Hostile Environment

Using WhatDoTheyKnow and the power of FOI, a campaign group has been running a tireless campaign to get to the truth.

They wanted to know why schoolchildren's personal data was being collected by the government, who it was shared with, and why. The answers were, in places, pretty shocking.

Intra-body FOI requests

We talk a lot about how you can use Freedom of Information to hold public authorities to account.

But those same authorities, or members of them, sometimes use FOI themselves — to solicit information from one another. Here's what that looks like.

What information should be published?

It saves everyone time and money when authorities publish data proactively, without being asked to do so. But how do authorities know which information is most useful? Here's one sure way.
