July 2018 News from ISAHU

What are you doing July 30 and 31st?  There's still time to register for the Carol Cutter Golf Outing and State Convention!  We'll see you there!

President's Message

As we looked forward to the upcoming NAHU fiscal year it is appropriate to look back on the recent past. Denny Wright has completed his second term as ISAHU President in his career. Denny provided a structure and strong foundation on which ISAHU can continue to build.

Denny Wright was deservedly awarded with the Presidential Citation Award at the recently completed NAHU 88th Annual Conference in Kansas City Missouri. In addition to Denny, Andrea Bogard was presented with the Distinguished Service Award for her years of leadership at the South-Central Chapter.

In addition to the individual awards, the Southwest Indiana AHU chapter was presented with a national award for winning the G.A.I.N. contest. This prestigious award requires a chapter to excel in the number of new members in the year as well as percentage of growth and a very high percentage of member retention.
Great job to Tom Gant and the SWIAHU Board for their efforts. The State of Indiana was presented with an award for the largest number of new members by a state as well as winning the Landmark Award for the 12th consecutive year. Many of our local chapters as well as ISAHU received chapter certifications for their efforts in the past year.
In the coming year ISAHU events will take on a new look. This new look will be on display at this year’s Carol Cutter Golf Outing on July 30th 2018 and at the ISAHU State Convention on July 31st 2018. If you haven’t yet registered for these event’s time is running out. You may view the national and regional presenters at this year’s ISAHU State Convention at:

The 2018 Annual Convention Award Breakfast was an exciting time for Indiana! We were able to celebrate the following Awards:

Andrea Bogard, Indiana South Central Chapter received the Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes members who have contributed significantly above and beyond what is normally called for in connection with association volunteer service at local state and/or national level over an extended period of time.  This was a well-deserved award.

Indiana State AHU received the Landmark Award – The Landmark Award honors a state chapter for outstanding achievements and excellence is serving their members, the industry and the public.  The size categories are: Chapters with a membership of 1 to 100; Chapters with a membership of 101 to 250 members; Chapters with a membership of 251 to 500; and Chapters with a membership of 500+. This was the 12th consecutive year that Indiana has won the Landmark Award!

Northeast and Southwest Indiana AHU received the Pacesetter Award – The Pacesetter Award honors local association chapters for outstanding achievements in serving their member’s, the industry and the public. The awards are given to chapters with a membership of 1 to 50; Chapters with a membership of 51 to 100; Chapters with a membership of 101 to 175; and Chapter with a membership of 176+

Chapter Certification
Chapter certification is an ongoing program that recognizes excelling chapters throughout the calendar year.  There are three levels which are based on the number of criteria met:  Platinum, Gold, and Silver. All SEVEN of the Indiana Chapters were certified this year:  Greater Bloomington, Greater Northern, Northwest and Indianapolis received the Silver Certification, Northeast, Southwest, and Indiana State all received Gold Certification, and South Central Indiana AHU was one of THREE chapters in the country to receive Platinum Certification!  Congrats to all!

Membership Awards:
Southwest Indiana AHU won the Highest Retention Rate for Membership in a Tiny local Chapter!
Indiana AHU for largest membership growth in a Medium Chapter!
We are so very proud of all of the Award winners and want to thank you for your hard work and dedication throughout the past year. We look forward to a new an exciting year for Awards when we meet again in San Diego 2019!

Association Health Plans

Association Health Plans work hard to provide quality medical coverage to Americans employed by small businesses.  The DOL releases its final ruling on Section 3(5) of ERISA - the definition of "Employer" - Association Health Plans.  ISAHU President-Elect Jeff Goodwin is an AHP expert and will be presenting CE on the new regulations at the 2018 State Convention.  Get registered to learn more about AHP's, pharmacy benefits, and more here!

Legislative Update

Welcome to July in Indiana!  It’s been a little hot and toasty lately and that’s not just the weather but also the political climate in general especially in Washington, D.C.

Federal Update

AHP’s (Association Health Plans), Drug pricing, ACA risk adjustment payments, Navigator funds, etc are all under discussion and in various stages of change as we speak.  And it doesn’t appear these type changes will be letting up any time soon. Both sides of the political aisle will be attempting to use the ACA to their advantage in this Fall’s election cycle. How this will work out is yet to be seen.  So, stay tuned.

President Trump and HHS Secretary Alex Azar are actively pursuing their “American Patients First” plan to lower prescription drug costs. Meetings with the heads of the various drug companies are in process.  How this will turn out will indeed be interesting to watch.

As always, continued Thanks goes to NAHU’s staff – eg, Janet Trautwein, John Greene, Chris Hartman and Marcy Buckner as they help direct the overall legislative process in D.C.

HUPAC Update

This election is important!

The House – what’s at stake: All 435 Seats are up for election.  Currently, Republicans have 235 seats, and Democrats have 193, with 7 seats vacant. Democrats need a net gain of 23 Seats to win the majority for the first time since 2010.  At least 59 districts — 39 held by Republicans, 20 held by Democrats — will not feature an incumbent running for reelection.  Since the Civil War, the president’s party has lost ground in 36 of 39 midterms, with an average loss of 33 seats. In the shorter timeframe of the post-World War II era, the president’s party has lost an average of 26 seats per midterm.

What is the value of membership in NAHU - what's your why?  Everyone has a reason to be here - a reason why they choose this professional organization over others.  ISAHU recognizes that, and over the next few months, we want to highlight some of the reasons why we believe NAHU membership is valuable, starting with President Don Griffey highlighting Broker to Broker.

A reminder about CE's:  As insurance professionals, we need to do our best to encourage you to take seriously the information being presented at these courses and learn the information by being actively present.  Therefore, be sure and stay for the full class (short bathroom breaks allowed), and do not read newspapers, use your computer (unless taking class notes)  or talk loudly. The sole purpose of CE is to increase your knowledge and professionalism in order to better inform your clients of our highly complicated insurance business and to avoid chances of needing to use your Errors and Omissions coverage.
